    Re: Up grade

With an upgrade you will or should not lose anything

    BUT

That is not the way to do it. Do a clean install, for best performance.
The you WILL lose everything and you have to reinstall. You will be happy that you took the extra time later on.

You use the same DVD, for both, so understand how it is done.

    Good Luck

    Re: Up grade

If you have a computer with Vista and it came preinstalled and you have a restore DVD, it will restore to Vista not Seven. If you have a DVD that came with the computer, it is not an restore DVD, it must have been part of a promotion that gave you Seven.

    Re: Up grade

Some Companies offered a upgrade disk when you bought the system... Theres ways to do it, depending on the disk, without the Vista part first.

But no, upgradingbwill keep your files...... hopefully... Always a risk losing stuff though.

Hey americancritic good to see you on the forum!
Could you transfer your music files, photos, other essentials onto an external HD? You are sure then the stuff you want is safe, then move it up to win7?
    Just a thought?

Or you could dual boot ;-) I've done that and running both windows vista and windows 7 on different hard drives :-)

    Re: Up grade

Ok I have the factory restore disk's that I bought from HP a year after I bought the computer. I have not bought win 7 yet or the upgrade, I plan on buying full version of 7 when the new computer is built and passing this one to my youngest daughter, at that time I will wipe this hard drive clean and restore it to factory spec's.

How much differance is there between the two or is everything I learned about vista going out the door and having to start all over.

Are a lot of the functions between the two the same or night and day.

Thanks for all the help thus far...

    Tom

    Re: Up grade

First Tom, DO NOT buy the full version of Seven, buy the upgrade. We can show you how to install the upgrade version (which is a lot cheaper than the full version) if you have Vista already installed.
I had Vista and now have Seven. The two are very much a like. There will be very little that you have to learn. Seven has more features and some of the old features are accessed differently. There is a small learning curve.
