Email Stomping Out Snail Mail as U.S. Postal Service Teeters on Bankruptcy

Think about the last time you mailed a physical letter. It's probably been awhile, unless you occasionally drop a line to your grandmother who refuses to purchase a PC. Now think back to the last time you fired off an email. Compare the frequency of the two and, in most cases, you'll find an enormous discrepancy. Turns out the shift towards digital communication is finally taking a toll on the United States Postal Service.

We have had letters from FL to NY travelling for 4 weeks. And for a while I had subscribed to a daily newspaper - about 25% of them never arrived. And one overnight mail took 1 week - unfortunately it was a little cooler full of frozen Checkers hot dogs that my MiL cannot get in NY. With that kind of service you cannot run a business.

Wow, you guys really have a terrible postal service, the queen owns our postal service and not receiving mail is demoralising the queens name so ours has to be delivered. I've never had post that's been more than 2 weeks late or even had mail that's not turned up(to my knowledge) and I'm 26 now ;)

You know, massive daily email use by everyone (including businesses) was not the only cause of the postal service's dilemma. We are now in a new technology world, and as they were not focusing on the "now," they got caught with their pants down. They should have seen this coming a long time ago. EX: When last have you seen someone using a type-writer? We are in the 21st Century now.

I pray that this situation becomes a wake-up call for many other "old school" thinking companies, who have also turned a blind eye to the changing times. They just have to do what they have to do to survive. Now, as a result of their idleness, many jobs are going to be lost. It makes me very sad.

I shall astound your further.

In 1996 I was in Maryland, USA. I was watching television and the Postmaster general of the United States congratulated the local post offices in getting half of all first class mail delivered within 30 days of it being mailed.

I asked my then boss and he confirmed that soe of their bills, including house mortgages, never showed up at all, or took two months to show at their home.

For those who are interested in the "inside" scoop! (from the horses mouth)

Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe wants to close half the country’s post offices, cut a third of all postal jobs, and pull the Postal Service out of its federal health and retirement programs. That’s 16,000 post offices, 220,000 jobs, and a lot of lost benefits. He’s doing all this to save the Postal Service, but there’s good reason to fear that he’s going to destroy it.
The Shock Doctrine: Why the Postal Service is scaring the hell out of us

July 26, 2011 Retail Access Optimization Initiative Map

What kind of a business would say it needs to cut the workforce by 220,000 employees, and then put ads online looking to hire new workers? If you don’t believe that, go to the USPS “Careers,” website and search for jobs.
Let's Talk: How the Postal Service Values Its Employees

Patrick Donahoe may be the last of the Postmaster Generals. He will certainly go down in history as one of the worst.
The Perfect Storm: How everything is coming together to take the Postal Service apart

As posted by whs:
We have had letters from FL to NY travelling for 4 weeks.
And I'm still waiting for a check to show up that was lost in the mail in June of this year. It can not be tracked and it would cost more for the company to stop payment and re-issue me a new one. Hm.....direct deposit!?!?!

As posted by JimJoe:
The US Congress gets free snail mail when they send out mail telling the voters about what they have accomplished.
Not just Congress! All political mail is free except for political mailings that target candidates who are running in elections. They are paid for by the Campaign funds or out of their own pockets.

Bottom line: My personal experience.

Who's watching those who are watching the hard working USPS Employee to ensure they are not wasting time and money?

There are way too many Chiefs and not enough Indians.

Nope! I'm not a disgruntled Postal Employee, just one who loves her job and will go out of her way to put the Service back into the Postal Service that the customer deserves.

I love my job!! repeat as needed

Hey! There's no huggy emoticon! Um..hey boss! Can we talk about that? :D
