It should have been that XP Home support finished in 2007 and Pro in 2011 - but the hiatus which eventually produced SP2 had such long-reaching consequences that MS extended support for both.

Vista's Alpha was in development in 2003, when all work was stopped for a year while they got SP2 right. The consequence was that they pretty much had to start development all over again, with the result that launch was delayed from 2004/5 to Jan 2007 (and then it was rushed!).

Unfortunately Microsoft's consequence for rushing through development stages is why this forum exists. Oo

MS is no worse (or better) than anyone else in this respect - They all have financial targets to meet, and stopping work on a project involving thousands of programmers for 18 months costs a LOT of money!

Good point... though this happens to be an ongoing trend in production across the globe with goods that are not as durable as they should be. Since there are so many computer repair shops everywhere, I don't expect MS to feel much of a blow from consumers asking for refunds when their system does go haywire either software or malware wise. I know, especially in business that it is better to do it right the first time around. Cars, computers, TVs, shoes/apparel, light bulbs, appliances, etc.. all rushed production, we shell out the money and have to keep shelling out money when stuff breaks because companies didn't take the time to make it durable and long lasting. It gives me a hobby though. :P

XP was pretty darned good while it lasted. But now, it's a relic. There's no new software being made for it. It has inherent vulnerabilities that are safeguarded in Vista/W7. I think it was one of the better OS's that Microsoft made, certainly much better than W2000 and W98.

Vista had a rough start, unfortunately. But thankfully Microsoft came through and fixed it up rather nicely. The damage was done, though. I know many people who cringe at the name "Vista", yet it's unwarranted. I've NEVER suffered a "Blue Screen of Death" in Vista. Only a handful of times did my system need a complete shutdown due to a 3rd party application that brought the processor unrelenting to its knees. But it always recovered, with no damaged file tables or indexes. Frankly, if it was just as conservative as W7 on power consumption, I wouldn't even think about switching.

^ Great news! I expect I'll be running W7 in place of Vista by then, so it's nice to know there'll be ample support (new updates to deal with critical discoveries).
