Ask not for whom the bell tolls, incandescents; it tolls for thee.

Along with the start of a new calendar year, the changeover to 2014 will signal the dawn of a new era, one in which rising efficiency standards render 40- and 60-watt incandescent light bulbs obsolete. The new standards will put an end to the Edison creation's century-long run as America's favorite light, and force consumers to turn to newer, more efficient technologies when replacing a burnt-out bulb

The trouble is, the ban is "not quite" because in certain circumstances there are no alternatives yet...appliance bulbs for the oven and fridg for instance. My local Hardware shop has stockpiled an enormous quantity of them and the other wattages just in case. For instance I didn't think a CFL would be safe in the canopy over my stove with all that heat and steam so in went a 40-watt incandescent. All my other bulbs are either CFL or the even more frugal (and expensive) LED ones so I feel that I've done my bit for the Planet and got the empty wallet to prove it.

Also our Government was quick to condemn incandescents but not that quick to make it easy to recycle CFL's which, as you know, contain traces of mercury, although I think that issue has been far overblown as the trace is really just that. As it is now we have to go to a central point locally to dump those (& batteries) instead of putting them in the general recycling bin. People are not bothering with that, especially in inclement winter weather, and just throwing them in the regular garbage.
