ok but not trying to be a wise apple why would someone use or trust an OS that was no longer supported with all of the other alternatives available to them.
although there did seem that alot of people ran windows xp after it was no longer supported.

My Computer

i mean i really understand being poor to the point due to medical expenses etc to where one can't purchase a current secure OS,

at my church we rescue old computers and install alternative OS on them just so people who are not able and need a computer we can hook them up with one at no charge.

My Computer

There are some folks still using XP, so I guess it just comes down to what they prefer to run on their computer.

To each their own, but we'll be around to help if needed. :)

Vista, XP, Windows 2000, and even older systems won't be going away anytime soon.
Many people are using Vista or XP and it meets their needs. They know little of computers and don't want to learn. Why spend money on a new computer or OS they would have to learn and may not run their existing software. This is a common situation. Other people have a new computer and OS but for a variety of reasons like to keep an old OS running.

Many businesses are running XP and have no immediate plans to upgrade. Some are running critical software that will not run under a newer OS. It may be custom software whose source code was lost years ago. Updating or replacing such software would be difficult and expensive. Many companies in such a situation take the easy way out and just keep the old systems running.

As long as older operating systems are around there will be forums to support them. I am a member of another forum that has a Windows 98 section. It isn't busy but it occasionally has some activity. There are still forums for Windows 3.1, a 16 bit OS released on 1992. There are forums that support the 8 bit systems of the 1970's and 1980's.

My Computer

Was Vista the first in your group of forums? There is another set of Windows Foums at xpforums.com and vistaforums.com that I visit (but the Vista one is quite inactive)

This site isn't related to either of those boards.

Anyway I use Vista x64 and wouldn't like this site to go, seeing as the other boards for Vista are dead. I use Vista because it's good - I don't understand why people cry, moan and complain about Vista and not about 7, when they are the same thing except one is slightly better on x86 machines?

Vista is my choice of OS for good reason, and it's really neglected.

i think a lot of people really never used vista and only read about what other people had written and that is what they based a decision on.ARM CHAIR USERS is what they are called.
problems i had with vista were easily solved.
i still have a desktop running vista and will keep it until it is no longer supported by microsoft.

forums as these are still around because the info and help that is supported by forum members and all others is damn good and that is why the continue to be active.

Well chances are that you will be able to use updates from Server 2008 on Vista (until January 2020). The original Server 2008 release and Windows Vista are codebase identical and the updates should install for IE9 and for the OS itself.

While updates for Server 2008 (not Server 2008 SR2) may currently work with Vista there are no guarantees this will continue. The codebase of Server 2008 and Vista are virtually identical but some files are different and this could cause problems. This is unsupported and Microsoft will likely issue warnings if the practice becomes sufficiently widespread.

It would be a good idea to make an image backup before doing an update, just in case.

That's precisely what I do now with Windows 8. The February 2012 updates went in with aplomb. All I did was run System Restore first to create a restore point. The updates are even denoted as Windows8RT-KB******.

Yes it may change down the road, but look at XP users now into almost two years of post support. They need a registry hack for their updates and it still works. Whereas 2012 updates go right on to Windows 8 without a hitch. I have a feeling that Vista will be in a similar situation. And I did cite "original" Server 2008 updates in my post, so I fully understand it's not SR2.

Currently the updates may apply to both vista and 2008 but I have a feeling to after support for Vista is dropped the installers will check to see if it is 2008 and refuse to install if it isn't. Besides Lmiller is correct that there are some differences between Vista and 2008 so a registry hack similar to the one for XP won't work. Ultimately Vista users will using a system no longer supported by Microsoft and with support being dropped by manufacturers of third party software. I have a valid license for 2008 but if I converted my mac to Windows I would put on 7 instead.

Again, right now I am already using Windows 8 in that "unsupported" state you speak of. It requires no registry hack, and Windows Server 2012 (non-R2) updates install perfectly. It is the EXACT same scenario that Vista vs 2008 (non-R2) will be in as of May 2017. So there is no check for Windows 8 on Server 2012 updates. There were no check for Server 2003 updates on Windows XP x64 (except for one early in the running, but they stopped after that). So why do you guys get this idea that Vista will be different? There are more users of Windows 8 than there are of Vista.

I think you'll find this will come and go as a non-event to be honest.

I am also curious. Day by popularity of Windows operating system is increasing. What will happen when Vista will no longer available?

My Computer

I'm not sure what you mean by available. If you mean in a store it hasn't be sold in a store since about when 7 came out. If you mean functional then people can continue to use Vista after April 11 of next year however there will be no more patches from Microsoft and other software vendors also may stop supporting Vista. Some already have including antivirus manufacturers. Just like with XP Vista will still run but you will be using it at your own risk. I'm sure that there will be some that will continue to use it.

I will continue to use it.
I'm attached to Vista in a similar fashion I am attached to Cammy White...

Perhaps there is a way installing unofficial updates after the end of its time?
