Help!! I got the blue screen!!

    My computer specifics are - HP Pavilion dv6226tx, 1.60Ghz, 2.5GB DDR2 (2 + 512)RAM, 120GB Harddisk, with vista home premium 32-bit service pack 2

    so here's the problem..

I have been playing around with my Vista for some days now. I patched my registry to account for custom visual styles and all.

The computer responded fine to all these changes until today. I installed Desktop Maestro 3.0.0.830 which according to the internet is a decent registry cleaner and works with vista sp2.

What I learnt from the net is that desktop maestro will clean registry and will quicken my startup. So i ran it, and it came up with 937 problems in my registry. So the next thing i did was "Repair". and it did just that. But since then my computer hasn't been starting up at all. Before the login screen comes, i get a blue screen, which remains for too short a time for me to read, and reboots.

    So, I did the following...

Turned the computer on in Safe Mode, which worked perfectly. Ran desktop maestro again, and restored the computer to a previous state. This didn't work. it kept saying C: has some errors please check. But the disk check doesnt work.

So, there were some backup files of the previous files created by DM, so i just backed 'em up.

This seemed to work, as the login screen showed up this time. when i entered my password, it shut down again. Again i turned it on in safe mode, and this time i get the following message, along with the following error message.

    Problem signature:
    Problem Event Name: BlueScreen
    OS Version: 6.0.6002.2.2.0.768.3
    Locale ID: 16393

    BCP4: 82842650
    OS Version: 6_0_6002
    Service Pack: 2_0

My computer is currently running in safe mode. So please tell me asap what to do?

    Hello praharmitra,
Have you tried the last know good configuration ?, (F8 on bootup), if that does not work try a startup repair, (link below).

    Startup Repair

You could always try a system restore while in safe mode too.

If you want a good registry cleaner try CCleaner. (link below) It's free and easy to use. (always backup your registry).

    CCleaner - Download

    Hey stoney-nutz,

Thanks a lot for your reply. However I have a problem there too.

My recovery disks are in my college hostel room, and I am here sitting at home I can access them in another 15 days though. If nothing else works, i guess i'll have to do that.

And my recovery partition, was lost when i installed ubuntu on my comp and removed it. Something happened and it was lost.

    Any other suggestions?

The registry cleaner, will it fix registry problems? If there are any?

I remember reading a cmd command somewhere, that scans your registry for issues. Do you know it?

Don't use registry cleaners! If your experience hasn't demonstrated this, please read the article at this link (it's written for XP, but still holds with Vista and Win7): XP Fixes Myth #1: Registry Cleaners

Here's a link to a brief description of the error message: Troubleshooting Windows STOP Messages The first parameter (a 3) indicates that it was a process that was unexpectedly terminated.

The most likely cause of this was the registry cleaner - but it's also possible that malware could be involved.

There's a couple of ways to go about this:
    - navigate to C:\Windows\Minidump, zip up the files there, and upload the .zip file in your next post. Hopefully the dump files will reveal the cause of it.
    - Enable boot-logging ( How To Enable Boot Logging For Fixing Startup Problems in Windows ), collect a Normal mode boot (as far as it goes), then collect a Safe Mode boot. Then compare the two to see what's different about them.

I would have to disagree with you on this one usasma, i have used CCleaner and have never had a problem with it, i would reccommend it to anybody, its a personal thing, you either like them or you dont, if you have been burnt by one then your not going to like them but i dont think you can say they are all bad.
Just take a look at this page

Re: Help!! I got the blue screen!!

That's the beauty of the online communities - we can disagree in a civilized manner and continue to cooperate.

My last experience with a registry cleaner was with Windows XP.
The registry in Vista and Win7 has become much more complicated.

That being said, I used many different registry cleaners repeatedly with Win2K and with XP. All, to include the Microsoft RegClean, eventually messed up my systems.

I have had instances at work where the registry cleaner at the Microsoft OneCare site has (presumably) corrupted the Windows registry (in both XP and Vista). But, I haven't had the opportunity to research this because of the time required (and my boss doesn't want to pay for that!).

Re: Help!! I got the blue screen!!

Thanks for not starting a flame war on registry cleaners, (you never know how people will react to somebody disagreeing with them), thats the last thing i wanted.
I think the biggest problem is the expectations of the user's, most seem to think it is a cure all for all that ails them, and they dont seem to backup their registry before using them, if used responisbly IMO they are a useful tool, but it's different strokes for different folks i guess
    PS. Your not so cranky.

Re: Help!! I got the blue screen!!

CCleaner's registry cleaner would be the only one I'd recommend if I ever had to recommend one, it's the only one that I've heard was problem free.

Cleaning the registry will NOT increase the performance of the computer though and should be used only when troubleshooting.

CCleaner's other tools are very useful though to increase the computer performance, I often clean the temp files and what's left by browsers with it, and I don't know why but it does increase the performance, only slowing the loading of webpages, but with today's internet speeds, that's not such a problem.

As for the problem, I'm not sure what could be doing that, but I could try and find what's going on if I get the time.
