What's with the crashing/restarting?

dunno

Sorry to bother you good people with what must be the most asked about problem, but I've had a good look through a heap of threads and not found the solution to my unbearable computer problem.

Alittle history; it's brand new, Asus, ready assembled from a shop. I deliberately did not buy a fancy put together one like last time as it caused too many problems (ironic).

Quad Core - 2.83, 4 gig of ram, nvidia 9400 graphics, what else can I say. Well, it keeps just crashing/restarting when ever it feels like it, and it appears to be getting more often.

Software wise, nothing too flash installed, anti virus etc.

There is a blue screen that flashes up for a miisecond prior to crashing but you wouldn't see it if you weren't looking for it.

I have an external soundcard, camera/skype, maybe this, but it was crashing before I got these happening.

I appreciate more info may be needed but let me know what it is and I'll be sure to supply it.

To better help you, and to solve this problem a lot faster, were going to need the dump file.

Click on the start orb > in the start search type .dmp > right click the file and choose open containing folder > then copy and paste the dump file to the desktop > right click the dump file and choose Send to Zip (Compressed Folder) > then upload that file here :)

Hi dunno

As you say the unit is BRAND NEW, you have at least 12 months guarantee, use it.

TAKE IT BACK TO THE SHOP, THIS IS WHAT GUARANTEES ARE ABOUT.

Hi CH

Thanks for having a look at the problem. I'm not a noob, however, when I type in .dmp it just does a seacrch of my files and comes up with a pdf I have on the h/d.

...and theog, yes taking it back is a real option nut I'm keen to try to sort things out for myself and end up with a machine 'I know'. Also, call me cynical, but when I've done that before, that's it, item gone for up to months and thanks very much. There's a couple of things I need the comp for that means I'd rather not be without it... even crashing.

You may not have a dmp file. If thcomputer crashed and the cause was memory it would have no place to write the file from or to. you can look in event viewer (type event in search) and go to the windows log application, and system tabs. look for errors that relate to the crasg and if there are errors can you tell us the most relevant event id and source code?

let us know if you need help with any of this

you can use the built in snipping tool (type snipping tool on search) to take a screenshot of the tab and then upload it using the attachment icon (shaped like a paperclip) in the reply form.

the screenshot is more useful to us.

let me know if you have any problems with this and thanks

Carl thanks for the snips. the event id 46 is a ttime service error. it the computer clock correct? I dont think its causing the crashing/restarting but it might be triggering something

edit: event ID 6008 also refers to t he timezone. there is a hotfix for both here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/326564.

hope this helps

Have you done the following:
Goto Control Panel\System and Maintenance\System

The crashing and restarting is more or less caused by a program or drive that`s o corrupt and starting to over heat, along with a slowness like, "lag". you might want to download iObit Security 360 or something like that to clean some stuff up. Also hire a professional to look inside for melted plastic and stuff, that's the #1 cause of computer crashing... over heating.

Without lights where would we be?

Over exaggerated information. I doubt a machine with those specs is going to overheat. Especially being brand new. Plus for something to melt plastic, that would mean leaving the CPU fan unplugged and booting, I doubt this is the problem in his case. I also beg to defer that the number one cause of crashes is heat. It might be a cause but definitely not the number one cause. I vote driver / software incompatibility :)

I concur. It seems to be your hard disk. Schedule a full scan by right clicking the drive and in tools/error-checking tick both boxes and reboot. Then search for mem in the start menu and press enter. Reboot. Then we will see.

Sorry it took a while. I ran the sequence you suggested Frostmourne and it took a few hours. Unfortunately, I guess you could say, the result was that no errors were found.

Zigzag, I went to grab the hotfix you suggested but it appears that it is for 2000 only and consequently, I didn't go through with it. The correct time is displayed although you could have a point as we were supposed to gain an hour and go into daylight saving but it's been called off this year.

I'm still having sudden crashes/restarts and see the snips for the messages I also get independent of the crashes/restarts.

I'm not sure where I can go with this thing. I'm considering taking it back to the shop but experience tells me that it will take ages to get back and possibly be put in the too hard basket and not get fully fixed anyway.

By the way, the gentleman suggesting that this could be heat related, thankyou but I'm not so sure as it's winter atm in Australia and very mild.

I'll sleep on it.

No, 'fraid not.

I caught a glimpse of BSOD prior to carshing/restarting and the topline read something about 'a problem being detected, but then it went and restarted.

Here's another snip.

I think it may be back to the shop time but I'm not confident.
