Have you looked in Event Viewer? There should be some notification there.

It'd be a good idea to open an administrative command prompt and run

sfc /scannow

This'll check your system files for corruption. If it says it didn't repair all of them, run it again.

Unfortunately, that doesn't help a hell of a lot as it means "The previous shutdown was unexpected".

No other related events? Also, check thr Reliability Monitor in Administrative Tools > Reliability and Performance Monitor and see if there's anything there.

I've been researching the problem a bit but there doesn't seem to be any consistent cause/resolution.

Make sure all of the following are up to date:

BIOS
Drivers
Windows Update

You can also try setting up your Power Options for Best Performance, and disabling hibernation and sleep.

i've done all the updating already i just havn't had a chance to look to far into the event log, the only things i noticed though were the same faults. in the performance monitor it had nothing, just running fine. i was curious could it be a problem in my moboard. i checked it out and i dont see any burn marks or anything like that.

This is often caused by overheating. Are you doing anything intensive when it happens, such as playing games?

Are you sure you looked in Reliability Monitor?

It should like the attached screenshot and should at least entries for the shutdowns.

The point about overheating is that it will not give an error, it will just die without warning, and often without log. Please humour me and check your temperatures for your CPU and GPU. Use RealTemp and tell me your Temperatures (only temperatures, not TJ Max or anything like that) Real Temp - CPU temperature monitoring

For your GPU, please use GPU-Z and tell me your Temperatures under the Sensors tab, and nothing else is required: GPU-Z Video card GPU Information Utility

Thanks for that. They are not excessively high values, within the normal range. So, for the moment, forget about overheating, but it is still the most common cause, and remember, this was not run just before it restarts and may be cool now. Do not just forget overheating. Ideally you would run these and monitor them every so often to see if the temperatures are rising just before a shutdown.

Hello,

Can you please start a new thread. That way the whole forum sees your post so you are much more likely to get an answer, and it does not clutter up this thread. Thanks!

Two more things, make sure the fan is running and not pushed again a filing cabinet or anything, and if you can, make sure the heatsink on the CPU has not shifted out of position.

hey fellas, I was wondering if a resolution was ever reached on this issue? not running vista (Win7 64bit), but I'm having the same issue. One thing I have noticed that seems rather odd about the issue is that it does not happen when I switch to my linux boot, seemingly ruling out the possibility of a hardware issue.
