Deleted my Desktop

While I was just on my computer arranging some pictures and listening to music, a window popped up showing that files were being moved. Aparently, it was my desktop. It was about 725 items. It confused me, so I canceled the action. Shortly after, I found a folder labeled "desktop" in my downloads folder. I opened it, and there was nothing in it. Thinking nothing of it, I deleted it and all of a sudden, all the icons on my desktop disappeared save for "my computer" and "Recycle bin". In panic, I restored the mysterious folder and ran a system restore to a checkpoint sometime yesterday.
When the computer restarted, I was not greated with the signature vista sound, and after logging in, I was met with a blank screen with nothing but my mouse pointer. I have no idea what just happened, and I'm kinda in panic. What can I do?

Hello,,

This can be a windows crash.. lets assume the worst.. so you are still getting the blank screen?
Can you try to restart the computer press "F8 or F9" on start to get the boot screen and first select "last good configuration" to see if works
if not try "safe mode"

Do you have system restore enable on this computer as the last resource will be going back to yesterday's system restore point...

cheers

Thanks for the suggestion! You were right about the system restore. It turns out that all I needed to do was let the computer boot up for about 20 minutes.

I think what solved it was immediately restoring the desktop folder and running the system restore. Just goes to show that calming down and letting it takes its time is the better thing to do before panicking.
