My Computer

Hi All,

This sounds very similar to a problem I have seen on TWO of my customer's Vista Home Premium (32 bit) PCs.

The symptoms I have seen are Vista boots up normally to the welcome screen.
User enters their password and their profile starts loading, but the desktop never appears, all they see is a plain (blueish grey) screen and the mouse cursor.

If I use <Ctrl>+<Alt>+<Del> and fire up task manager I can kill explorer.exe then start it. Desktop now appears.

If I then try to use something requiring elevation via the UAC prompt (such as regedit) nothing is seen.

Anything which does not require elevation seems to run ok.

I think the issue here is that the scure desktop feature of vista is b*gg*r*d.

In both cases I have had to resort to performing a full "bare metal" re-install.

Have any of you guys any suggestions for next time?
