CRCDISK.SYS ERROR argh!!

I am running Vista Home on an 3yr old Acer laptop. I cannot boot to windows at all. Everytime I try the boot stalls out at the loading bar. When I boot in safe mode I can see that the boot is hanging at 'crcdisk.sys'. Apparently this was a bit of a problem in the past.

As Vista was preloaded on the system I have no boot disc. The recovery partition was wrecked last year then I altered my partitions on the machine. There was some information on the net about deleting a series of files in the system32, drivers and other sections. Rather than deleting them, I renamed them to no effect. I have also tried altering the SATA setting in my bios, also to no effect.

I do have linux on the system as well and I can boot to that, which is how I am using the computer to access these forums. I need help solving this error. Much thanks in advance.....

Good idea! Ran the quick self-test. All clear. The SMART data shows a few bad sectors but nothing out of line for a disc of its age.

Created the disc and used the error fixing on it. I am able to boot to Safe Mode now, but that is all. The system still hangs when attempting a boot in normal mode. Is there anyway to do a chkdsk/f ? I've tried to do it but the system will not let me while I am running on C: which is where windows lives.

So some progress but still no joy. Oh, also tried using a restore point but that has also failed.

Can you boot into Safe Mode with Command Prompt?

I was able to get a chkdsk /f to fire up via my recovery disc. Chkdsk said that the volume was corrupted and it had been repaired. But now I can't even boot to Safe Mode.

Update. Was able to convince it to boot back in Safe Mode, once I got in ran msconfig and used 'original boot configuration' setting. The system will now consistently boot. But no networking or sound or 95% of services.
