BSOD problem

Hi,

Attached is my minidump folder. Recently I've encountered the BSOD twice and received the message of: DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

I copied and pasted the info that Windows provided regarding the problem:

My Computer

STOP 0x0000000A: IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL: Usual causes: Kernel mode driver, System Service, BIOS, Windows, Virus scanner, Backup tool, compatibility
I did not do a full analysis. It appears that the cause is safecontrolfilter.sys a driver. Just uninstall the old and replace with most current and follow instructions given below. If the driver is part of your security system just uninstall and replace with security software mentiond below. If problem continues just post and you will be helped.
Safeconnectfilter.sys driver | What is Safeconnectfilter.sys file?
Sana the company that made Safeconnecfilter.sys is now part of AVG.

Run an SFC

Scan with AntiVirus.
We may have to update all old drivers, but hopefully these easier steps will suffice. Safeconnectfilter is just one of the many old drivers in your system.

Thanks for the reply, richc46.

I'm a bit new to this, but should I download the safecontrolfilter.sys update in the link you gave? I don't know how to uninstall the old.

As well, when you refer to Anti-virus/AVG software, are you referring to the Rogers Online Protection software on my computer? I was going to keep that.

My Computer

The company that made that safecontrolfilter.sys driver was taken over by AVG. In addition, the driver is very old, I doubt if that link is good for a download. I sent you all the infromation that I used to prepare your analysis. It would be foolish to do it twice if needed.
T
he Dump report that you gave me show several possible causes for the BSOD, my feeling is that it is the filter. We should concentrate on that.

When I refer to AVG, I refer to them only because they took over the company that made the origianal driver. At this point that is about all that I know.

To get rid of the BSOD, we need to either replace the software that uses the driver or try to replace the driver. I think replacing the driver will be difficult since it is so old and the original MFG, has become part of AVG.

I went to the Rogers Security Center download page to find the driver. I could not get in. Says its for customers only who have Rogers. May I suggest, if we are going to have problems, it would be easier to use Microsoft Security Essentials, its free and one of the Best for Windows.

I enjoy helping at the forum and will do all that I can to see that we fix your problem, but there are things that I cannot do. Read and understand this Uninstall Drivers

This is the page that stopped me. Try to get in and see if you can find the correct driver.

Thanks richc46, I really do appreciate your help.

I actually just spoke with a Rogers Web Technician over the phone and I tried to explain the issue, but she never heard of a Blue Screen conflict with Rogers Online Protection.

However, she did direct me to the exact page you are referring to and I downloaded their latest software. I don’t know the driver specifics since it simply asked me to download their application and restart.

If this doesn’t work, I will post again.

If I did decide to uninstall the safecontrolfilter.sys driver, do you know which device it is exactly under? I am going through the Device Manager and I don’t know where to look.

Thanks again.

My Computer

You should be able to find every driver by using this method.

If you cannot find i,t this is what I would do, Make a system restore point, Uninstalll the security center. There is probably an uninstall tool to do this, from the company website. Install Microsoft Security Essentials for test purposes. If you really prefer Rogers, with the restore point you can easily go back.

Lets not forget, if you look at the first post I made, it shows that the virus scanner itself may be the problem. It would have to be removed if that is the situation.

I am just trying to find short cuts for you. Officially, I am suppose to tell your replace your security. Replace all old drivers, you have plenty of those, too. I would say about 30, which includes safecontroller.

You have to send me the new DumpReport, you made changes, I do not know what is in there now. It may bsod for another reason.

I tried to locate the safecontrolfilter.sys driver under Non-Plug and Play Drivers through Device Manager, but I don’t see it.

Though, I haven’t encountered another BSOD yet so I will keep the Rogers until then.

I am interested in updating the other drivers you mentioned, but I’m not entirely sure how. Do I just manually click them all? I also noticed that I cannot find an Update option when I click on the Driver properties.

I always assumed Windows updated my drivers through Windows Update. However, I do manually pick what updates I want though; is that perhaps the issue?

Attached is my latest DumpReport. Thanks.

Anything prior to July 09 is considered old

Put the name of the driver in search. If something comes up and it is not MSoft. Then it should be replaced, if you recognize the source as one of your programs. We do not want to change things we are not sure of.

So that means that the safecontrolfilter.sys driver is still an issue. I tried searching the Rogers Online folder and I still can’t find it though. I guess I will uninstall Rogers then.

I apologize for these questions, but I’m not sure what I should be doing next:

1) There seems to be a lot of outdated drivers, is there a method of updating all?

2) Most of the drivers seem to be Microsoft-related, therefore should I not bother replacing them?

3) I don’t know where these drivers are located through Device Manager. For example, I noticed that the driver eremOEM64.sys is non-Microsoft. I can't find it under Device Manager and if I were to update, do you suggest I go to the eMPIA Technology website to update it?

4) If the fltmgr.sys driver is a major issue, according to the link, the solution is to run a registry scan. Do I continue?

Thanks for your help.

Just make a system restore point, before the uninstall the security, you can go back with no problem if you so desire.

No drivers are done one at a time.
You should always try to go to the website for the best and most up to date. If done automaticllay, many times you get a driver "one size fits all" and not the best.
You do not have the expertise to get involved with the registry, do not do that. I do not think that it is even necessary.
When I get a chance, I will pick one driver and we will up date toghether, so you can see how it is done.

Step one to install

Do you you know how to get this information on this driver. This is an old one that will cause problems now or in the near future.
http://www.runscanner.net/file/emBDA64.sys.html
If you get this far we go to step 2

Step 2: With Google you find out the webpage of the manufacturer and look for downloads.

Please type with a bit bigger font.

EM28xx with UAC has 3 choices to choose from. On this side of my computer I have no way of knowing which is correct. If you are confident, make a System Restore Point, save to the desktop, uninstall and then install.

Why not start with one that you can find, just show me first. After a little practice you will get better.

Yes that's what I have been doing, I've tried both methods for showing Hidden Devices and I still don't see a driver called Embda64.sys.

I looked under Non-Plug & Play Drivers and the only drivers that begin with the letter E are EraserUtilDrv. I've gone through all the Devices and I don't see anything named
Embda, EM26, BDA, or the company's name eMPIA or Egalax. Unless it is titled under another name.

Sorry for the frustrations.

Forget that one. Uninstall one that you can find. Do that a few times. Once you get comfotable in device manager, you will do better.
