Blue Screens and Failed Startups

I've run Malwarebytes, SuperAnti spyware, and avast pro but they all come back with the same results. No virus infection. I've run the S.M.A.R.T scan for my hard drive and no problem detected there, either. System Start up repair gave me an auto failover message and when my comp finally booted up I get this message:

Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: BlueScreen
OS Version: 6.0.6002.2.2.0.768.3
Locale ID: 1033

Additional information about the problem:
BCCode: c5
BCP1: 00000290
BCP2: 00000002
BCP3: 00000000
BCP4: 820F3770

Please help... another problem I'm having is that my hard drive is constantly changing its mind on how much free space I have. Yesterday it said I had 130gigs, I start it up today and I'm up to 151gigs. I haven't downloaded anything or cleared anything worth that amount of space off my hard drive. I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium with AMD Anthlon 64 X2 dual core processor and 3 gigs of RAM. I can't use system restore because for some reason my restore points never stay for long...even when I uninstalled CC cleaner...

Edit I've run the Smart scan for my hard drive that was provided by the company. It reportedly has no problems. =/ Thank you for helping me.

Scan with your Anti Virus

Update outdated listed drivers
Uninstall your current Anti Virus and replace with Microsoft Security Essentials.

How to Find Drivers
search Google for the name of the driver
- compare the Google results with what's installed on your system to figure out which device/program it belongs to
- visit the web site of the manufacturer of the hardware/program to get the latest drivers (DON'T use Windows Update or the Update driver function of Device Manager).
- if there are difficulties in locating them, post back with questions and someone - search Google for the name of the driver
- compare the Google results with what's installed on your system to figure out which device/program it belongs to
- visit the web site of the manufacturer of the hardware/program to get the latest drivers (DON'T use Windows Update or the Update driver function of Device Manager).
- if there are difficulties in locating them, post back with questions and someone will try and help you locate the appropriate program.
- - The most common drivers are listed on this page: Driver Reference
- - Driver manufacturer links are on this page: Drivers and Downloads

Remove any virtualization programs such as Daemon or Alcohol 120% and then uninstall the SPTD driver with this uninstall tool http://www.duplexsecure.com/en/downloads

Test your hard drive at the manufacturers website.

After performing all of the above, post back with any new BSOD reports, or indicate that the attempted repairs were successful.

Please remember that several attempts may be required before we can solve your BSOD problem. These reports are not definitive but merely point the way to a solution.

Uhm, how do I update the files that have the .sys extension? I checked that site and it said that Windows Update should do it but apparently it hasn't been...

I'm having trouble with scmndisp.sys, crcdisk.sys, PxHelp20.sys, spldr.sys, msisadrv.sys, fileinfo.sys, mountmgr.sys, SCSIPORT.SYS, volmgr.sys, WDFLDR.SYS ,
WMILIB.SYS, BOOTVID.dll.

Should I just restore my computer to factory default? =/ I feel so lost dealing with this.

My Computer

First take your time

Follow every step that you can. Then see if you still have BSOD, if you do give me the new dump and I will analyze that and help you with the steps that give your problems.

Here is information on one driver that you mentioned. See if you can install the updated version

Scmndisp.sys file description
Productname: ® Neutral Wireless Solution
Description: NDIS User mode I/O Driver
Company: Windows (R) Codename Longhorn DDK provider

Pxhelp20.sys file description
Productname: PxHelp20

Forget spldr and crcdisk and msisadrv fileinfo as well as the other sys. they are MS driver and should be ok.

Sfc scannow reports no integrity violations and the smart scan provided by my hard drives manufacturer said that my hard drive passed all tests. So, I should just concentrate on trying to find updates for those two files?

My Computer

I would uninstall the Anti Virus that you now have and replace with Microsoft Security Essentials. I would then try the computer and see if the BSOD persist.

But most important Get rid of your Virtualization program and SPTD like I mentioned.

Will it block me from going to sites that have viruses on it like Avast does... I like that feature or will it just tell me when I'm already infected? And I'll get to getting rid of those programs... is there any safe way that I can have them?

My Computer

It is rated as one of the best anti virus. It should warn you. It is possible that the anti virus is not the cause of the BSOD. So you can use Security Essentials just to test.

The next thing to do is to uninstall daemon tools or other virtualization programs that you may have. Then uninstall SPTD. Sptd is know to cause BSOD. After you do each step, try the computer for a while it may be fixed.

You seem to be worried about security, good for you. Use Your antivirus.
Download and scan once a week with malwarebytes. It is free and you have to scan manually, yourself. It looks for things other than virus and is excellent at what it does

Then use this. I love it. Go to any site that may have problems, not just virus, but bad reputation for something, you will be warned. Before installing anything make a system restore point, so that you can get rid of it easily if not wanted

Good morning Richc46, I was hoping I wouldn't have to come back here to report this but rather something happier. =/ Ah well. Here is the minidump. I wonder if I'll just have to delete everything and start all over again.

Good Morning Strawberry

NO need to reinstall (unless it is what you want), the report came up as a driver problem, without giving any names. You have quite a few outdated and several very old drivers. I suggest the driver verifier to find the bad driver (s).

Okay, I'm backing up my stuff right now. I have a quick question though, is there any way I can prevent this from happening in the future without having to manually check all the things I have one by one? I might not even remember some of them.

My Computer

Heres the story.

It appears that you are ready to reinstall; that is not the right thing or the wrong thing to do, but hopefully what is best for you

You are going to use the install DVD, all drivers etc on that DVD are old. There have been many updates since you first purchased the DVD.
Same thing with programs the drivers etc are old. Reinstalling does not change that act

Since your current problem appears to be drivers.
Read this from Microsoft, it shows you how to keep drivers updated automatically. The bad news is that it does not monitor all drivers.

It is your computer and your investment, you have to maintain it. I will include a link that shows what you should do to maintain your computer. Write it down, so your remember. Some online services, like Yahoo, will even send an email when you have to perform certain tasks. One of those tasks, should be to update drivers from any porgrams that you have installed.

That driver verifier thing sounds scary.

"Using Driver Verifier is an iffy proposition. Most times it'll crash and it'll tell you what the driver is. But sometimes it'll crash and won't tell you the driver. Other times it'll crash before you can log in to Windows. If you can't get to Safe Mode, then you'll have to resort to offline editing of the registry to disable Driver Verifier."

Is this really the only way to check for bad drivers?

My Computer

No, you can check the list of old drivers manually, but you sure do have a lot.

- if there are difficulties in locating them, post back with questions and someone - will help you search Google for the name of the driver
- compare the Google results with what's installed on your system to figure out which device/program it belongs to
- - if there are difficulties in locating them, post back with questions and someone will try and help you locate the appropriate program.
- - The most common drivers are listed on this page: Driver Reference
- - Driver manufacturer links are on this page: Drivers and Downloads
To remove any left over driver remnants, especially from graphics cards, use driver sweeper Guru3D - Driver Sweeper

You are very wise to read the fine print on the verifier, yes it can cause problems.
