Won't Boot, Black Screen, No Mouse/KeyBoard

Please Help Me...I have a HP SlimLine DeskTop w/OEM Vista (Basic). It's about 3 years old or so (sorry that is all the details I have right now - I am posting this from work). My husband was using the computer Saturday but kept getting a bunch on internet explorer errors (common for us - we have Time Warner Cable). No big deal - he shut it down. Sunday I try to boot it up. Get to my desktop, everything seems fine - then screen gets all pixelated/mosaic looking. No Mouse. I shut it down, start it up again. This time I get to the blue screen that asks start normal, safe, etc. But the screen again goes weird. No mouse. Shut down, start it again - this time it goes to some kind of "Start-Up Repair" but then goes to a black screen & does nothing. So I shut it off again. I give up at this point & just leave it off until yesterday. I go to boot it up - green lights flicker across keyboard then go off, green light on tower flickers then goes out. Screen remains black. No keyboard, no mouse, no beeps, nothing, but I can hear the fan running. It's like it's trying to boot up but not making it very far. I haven't opened it up yet - I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to hardware. Does anyone have any idea what the problem is or what I should do. I don't have any recovery discs or anything - but I don't even know if that would work anyway. Before this happenned there were no updates/virus. Please help - I'm lost. Thank you in advance.

Thanks for the quick reply - I read through the BSOD Posting Instructions & How to create a recovery disc - however I am using the computer at work to post this & am not going to be able to use it to download/run anything & I don't have access to any other computers. Is there any other help or advice you can offer? Thanks.

OK - Here is some more info on my computer:

HP SlimLine s3012n
512 MB Memory
250 GB Hard Drive
Vista Basic Home
AMD Athlon 64 Processor

My husband & I opened up the case last night & made sure everything was correctly seated. We also cleaned out all the dust with canned air, but I am still having the same issue. I haven't had a chance to go to my parents house yet to burn those discs but I was wondering if there was anything else I should try in the mean-time? I've had a couple people at work tell me it might be the video card? Does that sound right? I've also had someone tell me it CAN'T be the motherboard because it's NOT beeping? I dunno...just really lost & upset right now...any additional help would be much appreciated...Thank you.

OK - Stupid question - I was reading through the "How To Create a Vista Recovery Disc" again to prepare myself for the task tonight - how do I know which version I have? 32 or 64 bit? Also - on the "Use Ubuntu Live CD to Backup Files From Your Dead Computer" - I didn't realize I needed to go buy an External USB or Hard Drive to back up to (stupid I know, sorry). Any suggestions on what to get? Thanks again.

Your right, sorry about that.

It might be somewhere on your computer case
or
On the invoice that you received
or
on the CD of some program that your purchased
or
if you know how much ram you had, if you had more than 3gb it is 64
or
Computer manual.

Couldn't find anything on case, no longer have invoice/manual, no idea how much RAM I have, & never had CD...I have a AMD Athlon 64 Processor so does that mean I have the 64 bit version of Vista? Any Idea what I'm most likely to have? I know the computer was made early-mid 2007 if that helps....Please help - don't know what version I have to make CD...Ty

You are probably 32 bit you only have 512mb memory, but the processor suggests 64 bit

You are 32 bit with 512 mb Ram. I do not even think that you can run 64 bit
Go as though you are 32 bit.

I would buy an external hard drive. Then you can back up the entire OS and never have this problem, again.
