Winload.exe Error

So here is the deal:
My friend's laptop died and he needed some files off of his hard drive so I figured I could throw it in his desktop and set up a dual boot system. Both computers are running Windows Vista Home Premium. I hooked up the drive and restarted the computer and the laptop drive as recognized as a drive (K:) and all was well. Then he wanted to dual boot so I installed EasyBCD and set it up to boot the laptop drive separately, but due to hardware compatibility issues and a lack of the original Vista Disk, I could not get the laptop drive to boot so I just booted the computer with the original desktop hard drive.

Everything was fine, but I didn't want the boot manager to show up anymore so I uninstalled EasyBCD. Then I restarted the computer to make sure everything was ok, but when I started up the computer the boot manager came up still, but this time only the laptop hard drive option showed up (which doesn't boot). I turned off the computer and unplugged the laptop hard drive and restarted the computer and the boot manager shows up with only the laptop hard drive option and then when it auto selects it it gives me the:

File: \Windows\system32\winload.exe
Status: 0xc000000e
Info: The selected entry could not be loaded because the application is missing or corrupt.

I tried to use the recovery partition (D:) to do a system restore (no help) and the start-up repair but it doesn't seem like anything changes and it stops trying after one "fix" even though it says it may try multiple times if it isn't fixed after the first attempt.

There is a lot of important data on this computer and I know I can back it up and system restore, but I don't want to have to wipe his desktop if I don't have to.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
