    USB Device Not Recognised

    Hello.

Last week I encountered a problem with my computer not being able to recognise my mouse. I get the following error when plugging it in.

"One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it. For assistance in solving this problem , click this message."

I have for weeks now tried to resolve this issue on my own, searching forums online, and am at my wits end. I would be forever grateful if anyone can solve this issue.

    Some background information;
*It is a Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer 3.0 - I also own a Logitech gaming mouse, and this is also not being recognised. I have updated drivers for my logitech mouse, and downloaded drivers software for the Microsoft mouse.

*I own a G15 Logitech Keyboard which also uses a USB port, and this works PERFECTLY FINE.

*My headphones also utilize a USB port and also have no issues functioning as per normal.

*Both the Logitech and Microsoft mouse are detected and work fine on my friends PC, and both work fine on my housemates laptops (two different models).

*The mouse shows up in the Device Manager under "Universal Serial Bus controller" as an "Unknown Device". Under Driver Details "No driver files are required or have been loaded for this device.". Upon trying to update (automatically) I am told "The best driver software for your device is already installed. Windows has determined the driver software for your device is up to date.".

*I must emphasize that the ONLY USB devices not being recognised are my mouse.

    THINGS I HAVE TRIED.
*Rebooting in Safe Mode with all USB devices unattached using a normal keyboard to login. Plugging my USB mouse in, I get the same error.
*Updating Vista(x64) until there are no more updates
*Updating every driver I am aware of
    *Uninstalling/Deleting all root hubs
*Deleting C:\Windows\inf\INFCACHE.1 then installing my USB keyboard before attempting to install my mouse. (Have also tried deleting then rebooting both in normal and safe mode).
*Uninstalling/Deleting all Host Controller's then rebooting
    *Virus Scans, Registry checks
*Formatting my hard drive and reinstalling Vista, updating vista again with drivers.

    Which brings me to now.

I really do not know what else to do, what really is puzzling me is that all my other USB devices work fine, its just the mouse. Vista acknowledges there is a usb device it just does not seem to be able to classify it as a mouse.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers.

Hello, and welcome to the Vista Forums!

Have you tried moving all of the USBs around? It could be one defective USB port.

Thank you, and cheers for taking the time to respond.

I should of mentioned I have about ten USB ports on my computer and have tried the mouse in all of them.

I have also systematically used all of the ports with my keyboard to rule out a defective USB port.

Anything else you can think of, I appreciate any ideas.
