I have a Compaq Presario c700 and every time I cut my computer on I get this message that tells me to enter boot disk. I went onto my other cpu (xp) and downloaded the recovery files onto my usb drive and stuck it in the laptop but it didn't work. Do I have to get the OS? If so I need a free one.
I need help badly my xp doesn't have a cd burner.
PLEASE HELP!

Hi,

Not sure what you have done, but you will not get a free system installation system disk from this forum.

We can help you recover the system you have provided it is not beyond repair.

So exactly what have you done & how did it happen?

Basically Monday I came home from school and i got a message that said "No boot device- insert book disc and press any key" so I hooked up my other computer and tried googlin' some stuff and I found this website that gives the restore cd to download, so I downloaded it and set up the BIOS setup so I can do it on my usb flash drive, so I put in my flash drive and that message went away and another message came up saying missing operating system.
Also Diagnostics on the HD failed :(
but i'm hoping that the HD doesn't have damage to it

My Computer

Ok,

What diagnostic tool have you used & if you enter the bios does the disk show there?

What windows/ other systems where on the drive originally & curently (before failure)?

Do you have a backup installation disk from of the full syatem i.e Recovery disks or even a full system back that you have created from addition software installed on your working system? i.e Nero, Drive back-up etc. etc (too many to list)?

The more information you can give the more it will help.

The operating system before the crash was windows vista.
I used the Hard Drive Diagnostics Long Test and it failed.
I don't have the actual recovery disk because it didn't come with the computer, but I downloaded one and put it onto my USB Drive and changed the boot order so that the usb diskette on key was first.
It's a 32bit Vista also..
umm i don't think I have any additional software.
I can't access the computer, the hard drive won't boot up. That's what the problem is I think.

Hi

Please burn this ISO image to a CD, boot from the disk & let it work on your disk. If there are any errors that persist (RED BLOCKS) this means the drive is broken & you need a new one.

It will be slower the more errors it finds! It does not destroy any information on the disk but does correct errors on IDE drives. Not sure about SATA though!

Please let us know how you get on?

Hi

Please burn this ISO image to a CD, boot from the disk

You need to boot from the CD & let it run detection & repair on your IDE disk. I am not sure if it will do SATA drives.

Please let me know, if it does?

OK,

Does the faulty unit have a floppy drive? If so: -

Use this tool to create a floppy disk from the included .IMG image file: -

WinISO - Extract ISO, BIN to ISO, Edit, Create, Bootable ISO

tools

Write a floppy disk image (to disk).

You must have a floppy drive 1.44MB (standard size) & a clean, undamaged disk.

Then boot from this floppy & test your hard disk drive (Again IDE, not sure about SATA).

I havent tried that way yet because I'll just wait to burn the cd at school or something.

But when I tried to recover using the USB Drive instead of "no boot disk" or "missing operating system"

I get this message:

No systemdisk. Booting from Harddisk.
Start booting from USB device

it just stays there, what does this mean?

My Computer

Hi,

Could just mean it needs more time or again there is a fault.

Do you have access to another computer that yu could connect the other drive to & complete some tests on it? Otherwise please check you drive with the software (CD) & get back to us.
