For the past week laptop has been displaying message that Windows 6002 build is not genuine. There were also error messages regarding memory and security. On Saturday a friend came over with an external flash drive and copied some Photoshop files. That was the last driver that was installed. The last Windows security update was for Microsoft Office 2007 compatibility which was installed on 11/10/10. Yesterday BSOD appeared:

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer, If this screen appears again, follow these steps.

Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for driver updates. Try changing video adapters.

Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select advanced startup options, and then select safe mode.

I have started the computer in Safe Mode with networking and have been researching crash issues/fixes, which led me to this forum. I am not a computer expert, but I am a do-it-yourselfer and I hope that I have followed the rules re: posting, uploading dump file, etc.

I tried to run the Reliability and Performance Monitor check but received error message: "Error: And error occured while attempting to generate the report. System cannot find path specified".

I hope this is enough information to provide me some guidance.

Thanks in advance!!

SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED_M (1000007e)
This is a very common bugcheck. Usually the exception address pinpoints
the driver/function that caused the problem. Always note this address
as well as the link date of the driver/image that contains this address.
Some common problems are exception code 0x80000003. This means a hard
coded breakpoint or assertion was hit, but this system was booted
/NODEBUG. This is not supposed to happen as developers should never have
hardcoded breakpoints in retail code, but ...
If this happens, make sure a debugger gets connected, and the
system is booted /DEBUG. This will let us see why this breakpoint is
happening.

A quick review indicates that it is hard drive problem. Make sure that you have enough space on your hard drive. Check the hard drive. If all are negative defrag.

Test Hard Drive www.carrona.org/hddiag.html or this test Hard Drive Diagnostics Tools and Utilities (Storage) - TACKtech Corp.

Thank you for your quick response.

This laptop has a Seagate drive. I downloaded the Seatool file to run a diagnositic test on the drives but couldn't install it in Safe Mode.

The disk defrag is scheduled to run weekly and was last defragged on 11/10. I ran the defrag in Safe Mode, and from what I've learned, it runs silently in the background when in Safe Mode. Maybe it helped, because after that I was able to boot the computer in regular mode and do a final back up on my external harddrive. Although each time I try to defrag it still says that it was defragged on 11/10.

I have since installed and ran the Seatools Basic Tests.

Any ideas?

Well,
You have to understand my position, I cant see or touch the computer. All I have is the information from the dump report and what you tell me.
The report indicates hard drive
You gave me the results of several tests and some say fail.
The HD tests are not always definitive.
Taking everything into account, I think that you should back up your stuff and get ready to buy a new HD.
If you do get another BSOD, post and I will check it again. You have given me several already and most of them give the HD as the cause.
You, now, have the benefit of all that I know.

Thank you again for your reply.

I took the laptop in to get repaired.
The product key sticker is worn on the underside of the laptop and not entirely legible. I'm not sure how it came to be so worn as the computer is only a couple of years old, but it is entirely possible that my two young children tried to peel it off, thinking it was a sticker.

The computer was purchased new at Staples a couple of years ago and we are the original owners, but the repair guy definitely made me feel as if I had a stolen laptop with pirated software.

Unfortunately, they determined that Windows Vista was corrupted and were unable to extract the product key from the drive and couldn't reinstall the Windows software without it. Without that product key, I am out of luck, I guess. :(

My Computer

IM sorry you must have that key to reinstall. I assume you did not back it up.

What do you think, Rich. If we were to clone the hard disk, with the corruptions, maybe we could then fix the corruptions, and possibly, possibly, fix the BSoDs. However, I am also surprised that they were not able to recover the product key. Perhaps we should try a few tools, because I am curious as to how they cannot recover the key. If we could just get the key. Hmmm.

Rich,
If this is a preinstalled OS there are two keys. One key is on the body of the computer. That is the key that should be used. The other key can be seen with software like Magic JellyBean, but this key number will not work. It is a special volume key number that the Manufactuer used to actually install the OS. It will not work. I know this form much experience at the Forum.

Good point. However, I do find that occasionally it does work. I can re-install my OS from the volume liscence. This is going to cause a problem. I forgot about that volume liscence issue. This is going to cause a problem. Hmmm.
