Blue Screen Of Death

Hi guys, so I've been getting BSOD a lot but that usually happens if I try to defrag the computer.

I have been guessing that it's because of Low RAM or a failed hard drive but hopefully the .dmp files will help figure it out.

I remember getting a BSOD which said Memory Management and there was another one called Kernel_Inpage_Stack_Error or something like that.

Thanks

I forgot to mention that some of my programs have gone missing as well.

When I press Start Menu > All Programs, the programs like Windows Movie Maker or Audacity or Paint.NET, don't appear at all. I can only access the programs which are in folders after I press All Programs.

I haven't updated or installed anything lately so I'm not sure what is happening at all.

I suggest starting all troubleshooting with the following diagnostic tests. They'll save you a lot of time and heartache if there is a hardware failure, and you'll have the disks on hand in case you need them in the future:
H/W Diagnostics:
Please start by running these bootable hardware diagnostics:
Memory Diagnostics (read the details at the link)
HD Diagnostic (read the details at the link)

Also, please run one of these free, independent online malware scans to ensure that your current protection hasn't been compromised: Malware (read the details at the link)
It is possible that the following older drivers may be causing your problems.
Please either REMOVE or Update the older drivers listed below.
HOW TO FIND DRIVERS:
DO NOT use Windows Update or the Update Driver function of Device Manager as they are not the most current versions available.
Also, DO NOT update from the PC Manufacturer's website unless the Driver Reference cited below states that you should get the drivers from the OEM.

The most common drivers are located on this page: Driver Reference
If you can't find the driver, post back and we'll see what we can find.

Here's the older drivers that were found in the memory dump files:

This is most likely a hardware error - but compatibility issues can also cause this.

Ok, I'm gonna try to update the drivers within the next few days but I am trying to avoid doing any tests which require me to burn images to CDs etc. because I'm a 13 year old boy who doesn't want to get blamed if anything happens and also I am quite unfamiliar with this process.

My Computer

System One

  • Manufacturer/Model
    Asus X58L Series
    CPU
    Intel Celeron - M575
    Memory
    1024MB
    Screen Resolution
    1280x800 I think
    Hard Drives
    120GB
This is most likely a hardware problem. This is indicated by the number of different error codes present. Normally an error with a driver will give just one error code across several BSOD's.

Additionally, the bootable diagnostics are safer than almost any other operation. They don't change anything on your system - they just analyze it and report results.
We can walk you through the burning process.

As this is a laptop there's not much work that you can do on it.
You can replace the memory or the hard drive (which we have tests for)
And occasionally you can replace the CD/DVD drive and the wireless card (which we don't have tests for)

Finally, this isn't a 100% sure solution - it's our best guess as to what's going on.
BSOD's are generally caused by this stuff:
- 3rd party drivers (most common)
- hardware problems (broken stuff)
- incompatibilities (next most common in newer OS's, getting less common as an OS ages)
- Windows errors (least common)

I would concentrate on the 2003 and the 2006 drivers first. Vista was released in late 2006 - so drivers from 2006 and earlier are the most likely to have compatibility problems.

If you can't find newer drivers, then disable the older drivers from loading (use this free application: Autoruns for Windows ) Be careful to select the proper one's. If you do use this method, create a system restore point beforehand. That way, if there's an issue you can restore the system fairly easily.

Ok, I've burnt the .iso file to a DVD+R disc. But before I do anything, do I need to back up my files?

I have 10GB left on my hard drive (D Drive) and 15GB on my main hard drive (c drive).
I've got another disc which has 4.7GB so what do you recommend?

I always recommend backing up your data. You can never tell when a critical system component will die and leave you without your data.

That being said, if you only have one more DVD - you'll have to take a chance (you'll need one for the memory test and one for the hard drive test).

Good luck!

The problem is I don't wanna back up my data on a drive on the same system because that hdd may fail. Also I'm trying not to buy an external hard drive.

So do I NEED to back up?

Probably not - but that's not a sure thing.
We won't know if you need a backup until something fails.

The risk of losing something while running the diagnostics is low. I've only seen 1 drive that may have failed on me during testing - and I usually run between 5 and 15 hard drive tests a day.
