vista start up problems

Hi, I've try to research the threads in this forum to answer my questions but haven't had much luck finding what I need. I'll try to describe the issues that are occurring with my system, here goes. About 1 month ago my machine started shutting down by itself in the middle of just about any application I was running whether it be browsing the internet or running window movie maker. The problem kept getting worse and I ran the various diagnostic tools available in the start up menu. I was also told by a friend who is an IT professional that it might be one of the hard drives. He said that Seagate HD's have been failing at work and that is what I have in my machine. He suggested running check disk and possibly unplugging one of them. While all this was going on the second HD said that it was full so I deleted most of the file I had on it and it still said it was out of space when the machine tried to save an auto backup. I tried the suggestions my friend said and it still didn't fix anything. When I spoke to him again, he said if all else fails, re-install vista. I decided to go ahead and re-install because I had the disks and didn't think it could hurt anything. I re-installed, downloaded sp1 and sp2 and all the numerous updates for vista home premium. I made some adjustments to customize it the way I like it and now have start up problems. When I shut the machine off for overnight and try to re-start in the morning, it usually hangs up on the bluescreen with no hd activity. I manually shut down and re-start and sometimes it will start normally or display the window that says boot in safe mode or start windows normally. I usually start normally but on occasion will run start up repair but the problem persists. After the initial start up and sometimes re-starts, I can shut down and restart without and hang up.

I entered my system information in my profile and hope that it will display. If it doesn't I can give that information too. I feel like I am somewhat of an advanced user and can usually make the changes that are suggested. I'd appreciate any help I can get with this issue.
