This is my computer:
HP Pavilion a6720y Desktop PC Product Specifications HP Pavilion a6720y Desktop PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English)

Started last week. Left the computer on over night to defrag. Came back and got these errors (over dozens of restarts). I bought the recovery discs' directly from HP

"Reboot and Select proper Boot Device or insert Boot Media in selected Boot Device and press a key."

"The file is possibly corrupt. The file header checksum does not match the compu (cut off) ed checksum."

Boot Device:
DSK00 WDC WD6400AAKS-65A7B2
DSK02 HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GH40L

"BOOTMGR image is corrupt. System cannot boot."

"AHCI Port0 Device Error
Press F1 to resume."

When i pressed F1 it took me to the boot menu ... i think.

"Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:

1. Insert your windows installation disc and restart your computer
2. Choose your language settings, and click "Next."
3. Click "Repair your computer."

Testing : Drivers
Error Code : BIOHD - 2

File \Boot\BCD

Status: 0xc0000034

Info: The Windows Boot Configuration Data file is missing required information."

I bought a new hard drive:

WD Caviar Black

1TB 32MB/7200 RPM and im still getting the same messages.

Diagnostic scan said my memory and CPU are fine but it froze when it came to the HD. I don't understand what could be wrong.

Also, i took a look at the CPU and the thermal paste seems dried up. Could that be a factor?

Run the free hard drive diagnostic (bootable) from here: HD Diagnostic (read the details at the link)

Check to ensure that the BIOS is set correctly (I wonder about the BIOS treating the hard drive controller as AHCI or IDE/Legacy). Let us know what it says (HP's usually use F10 to access BIOS/Setup) Check the date/time in the BIOS to make sure that it's working correctly.

Do you have a good backup of your data? If so, try running the HP recovery disks. They'll wipe everything off your system (hence the need for a backup), but that'll tell you if it's hardware or software.
