Applications won't start!

Hi,
I'm on vista home premium x64 and I think a massive virus just hit my computer. I was browsing the net using firefox when I clicked on a bad link which closed firefox without prompting and opened up a program called "Vista Anti-Virus 2011." This program kept on begging me to register it to which I said no to. I closed that program but found that when I clicked on other applications such as Microsoft Office or itunes, the mouse would go busy as if the program were about to start but would not start or show up in the applications part of the task manager. I rebooted but the same problem arose. Then I tried to restore the system but even the system restore program won't open.
I desperately need some help fixing this as that computer has a lot of work on it and I lack the time or money to call a professional. Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Thank you.

Hi welcome to the forum.
Windows/Microsoft have recently introduced a anti -virus software to your program.
However in view in view of re-booting etc,
Would you please do the following:-

First, to assist in the elimination of possible virus and/or malware.
I would ask you to please use your Anti-virus full scan program facilities, making sure, you have updated the software first. Please advise us of the results.

If you do not have any anti-virus loaded please go to this link and download Microsoft Security Essentials :- Microsoft Security Essentials | Protect against viruses, spyware, and other malware

Secondly, please download:- malwarebytes Malwarebytes a Malware searching program, again, an updated full scan. Notify results please. Both these programs are Freeware
In the meanwhile I'll check on the vista anti-virus.
Do not do any more System Restore Points work, you could be possibly taking back any virus present.
Thank you.

It will not hurt to follow the adivice of Kesume, regarding malwarebytes etc. After the scans, however wait for our forum expert. It has always been my approach that regardless of what appears to be downloading, if problems appear, it is always best to assume that it is a virus assuming a name that will not be questioned.
