windows explorer (vista) not responding?

So I use Vista and recently (starting maybe a year or a few months ago?) my computer has been running insanely slow. For instance, after I turned on my Compaq Presario f700 laptop this morning, I first tried to run Google chrome but the computer just froze , saying 'Windows explorer is not responding'. Another example is that whenever I try to run open up a Word document, it takes at least a full minute before I can actually see the document. Even when I try to open the Control panel, it can also take minutes just to open up. Alot of times when the laptop freezes, I will get a message saying 'Windows explorer is not responding'.

I purchased this laptop in 2008. Is there anything I can do about this?

First of all, if you could post more info about your system specs (preferably to your profile, but right here will work too) that would greatly help.

Hello and welcome.

These are some things I would do first. Virus's, malware etc can cause the things you have told us so first please do the following.

1. Run a full Updated virus scan using your computer Anti-Virus...
2. If you don't have please download and run a full updated scan using malwarebytes her is there link and use the free version.
Malwarebytes : Free anti-malware, anti-virus and spyware removal download

After making sure you do not have a problem with maleware or virus the try and run a sfc scan here is a tutorial it is pretty easy heres how.

And please do as suggested by slammer in filling in your system spec's as it does help us.

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/66978-system-files-sfc-command.html

1. Click Start...
2. In the search box type CMD...
3. When the popup menu comes up at the top you will see CMD.EXE Right click the CMD.EXE and run it as administrator...
4. When the prompt comes up the type: sfc /scannow notice there is a space between the sfc and the forward slash...

While the scan is runnning do not use your computer and don't click the mouse it works better that way...

When the scan is finished if it show any errors then run the sfc scan 3 more times as it fix's more each time it is run.

After you do these things then please post the results so we can see whats going on. LOL

Maybe, the following tutorial could help :

Speed up perfromance
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/81176-speed-up-performance-vista.html

Personally, I would do the followings, in the sequence listed :
( Some on the lsit have already been suggested. I don't mean to repeat what others had already said. )

1. Make sure the machine is clean by running virus scan. Malwarebytes is one of the best in the business.

2. Run a system file check to make sure there are no corrupted files.( sfc /scannow ) :

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/66978-system-files-sfc-command.html

3. Run a disk check to make sure no bad sectors etc. ( chkdsk /f/r )
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/67612-check-disk-chkdsk.html
Go to Method Two, use the cmd and enter this command line ..... chkdsk /f/r
Note : there is a space between " chkdsk " and "/ ".

4. Run a disk defrag to defragment the fragmented files.
I would use Auslogic disk defrag. The Windows built-in defrag is a pain to use.

5. Regulary do disk cleanup to remove temp files etc.
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/76073-disk-cleanup.html

6. Remove un-needed start up programs.I am not totally qualified to tutor this subject.
Here is a tutorial to show the list of Startup programs in general. It tells you what are needed and what are not.

Hello!

There is also one more big cause of freezing, which a lot a people don't know about. And this is Deferred Procedure Calls (DPCs). Some of you are probably thinking that this is utter rubbish because you have never heard of DPCs before. But it is not rubbish! DPCs can be one of the biggest causes of computer slowness.

However, Task Manager can't see them properly (it *sort* of can, but the whole System Idle Process in Task Manager is completely flawed and inaccurate. If you want to know why, ask me :))

So, let's just rule out DPCs. Please download Process Explorer: Process Explorer

Run it, and look at the top, under the System Process find the Interrupts sub process (or so it looks in Process Explorer)

If you can, when your computer freezes, can you see if your CPU usage for Interrupts spikes?

Thanks a lot!

Richard

Here is how to call up your cbs log......

How to obtain cbs log

Start > in the search box, type cmd > top left, right rick at cmd.exe > Run As Administrator > at the flashing prompt, type this command.....

notepad c:\windows\logs\cbs\cbs.log
( note : There is a space between " notepad " and " c ". It is better if you copy/paste the command line in order to avoid typo. )

> press Enter key.

Almost immediately your cbs log will appear in notepad window.

( I am not qualified to teach you how to analyse ).

Hello!

Since I will be the one looking through your CBS.log, and I have my own method which saves me time, can you please:

Please copy the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS folder to your Desktop, right click on it > Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder, and upload the new file which is created on your Desktop here.

Thanks a lot!

I did see this message once in Notepad: "Repairing corrupted file [ml:520{260},l:60{30}]"\??\C:\Windows\System32\MigWiz"\[l:24{12}]"MIGUIImg.dll" from store".

How do I "copy a version from the system store"?

I just restored my comp to its original factory settings. It still has the problem where, when I start up the computer, if I simply just move my mouse cursor over the battery icon on the lower right-hand corner, it will take a LONG time before I can finally see the battery level.

I ran cmd, and then sfc /scannow, and STILL got the message:
"Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log"

Post your cbs log here and let the experts analyse for you.

Here is how to obtain your cbs log :
SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker - Windows 7 Forums
Go to Option Three which shows you how to put a sfcdetails.txt on the desktop.
You can then open it from the desktop.

Copy/paste it back to this forum.

I can't analyse for you..... not qualified.
