You must be able to boot to fix the problem. Can you boot in safe mode?

no i can not login in safe mode

1.) i am using a milagro utility program that lets me boot in with a CD and
have access to the C drive.

2.) i was wondering if i can find this driver someplace and copy it to the

appropriate windows system32 directory. \windows\system32\DRIVERS\disk.sys

Um if you have another computer, I think you can put your install disc (for whatever OS you have) in and open it up and find all the core drivers like that. Then put it on a flashdrive. Put an Linux Live Boot CD into your problematic computer, boot off that, and copy it off the flashdrive into the appropriate folder. (I also discovered a way to use the repair options that are either built into your comp or on your install disc to access files when you can't any other way, if you want. But it's more complicated) If you want to try that and don't know how to do any or all of that, let me know and I'll try to guide you through it. Also, if that doesn't work or you don't want to try that for whatever reason, you can use that Linux Live Boot CD to get the "Valuable Information" off your computer.

hi:

that was very cool of you. since the vista download was done on sony's
website and a complimentary download, i do not have the install disks
for Vista. sony no longer offers the DISCS or complimentary download.
do you know where i can get this file to install, \windows\system32\DRIVERS\disk.sys.

is there someplace in cyberspace i can download?

thanks

...dang. Well, try to find a friend with same OS and bit (32 or 64) CD as you? Another option (I think posting this might be against forum rules, so sorry. Seems like a desperate situation): Since you obtained Vista legally and are trying to fix it, the only place I can think of for getting that file would be to torrent the Vista disc. It's illegal and all, but personally (ethically) I'd find it OK since you'll just be using it one time to get the file you need. Otherwise, Maybe you could contact Sony and ask them for assistance in obtaining that file. They might be able to send you a repair disc (usually at a small cost) that would be usable in this situation as well.

as an upgrade. i tryed my HP vista could not boot. i wonder though if i could
use the HP \windows\system32\DRIVERS\disk.sys file and install into my directory.

once again thanks again.

Have you tried a startup repiar?

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/91467-startup-repair.html

To do this you will need a recovery Disk which you can create on another computer

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/141820-create-recovery-disc.html

Hope This Helps,
Josh

No It will not

Yes if you install the disk.sys driver then it would work but you cannot just install a core driver

You will need to either follow a process of injection of a driver which is a string of DOS Commands or run a startup repair which should allow you to boot up into windows to run a system Restore

Note   Note
Startup repair and system Restore DO NOT Move,Delete or Edit any of your personal files and only Edits the Registry and system files

Is the boot order in your BIOS set to boot from Disk first?

You may want to try with your Ubuntu Laptop

If you're running Vista Home Premium 32bit then I can extract the file from my disc and upload it for you. You will need to boot from a linux live cd and replace the file.

This would only work if you're running 32bit Home Premium. Well it may work for other versions as they overlap with the core system files but I don't want to risk it
