Windows Vista freezing after a few minutes of use

This laptop is about to go flying through a window if it keeps messing up on me. It all started with a broken DC jack. Before I took that to be repaired, my laptop started freezing after about 5 to 10 minutes of use. When I run it in safe mode (as I am now) I have no problems whatsoever. I had this hopeful idea in my head that everything would be back to normal when I got the circuit board replaced. The fact that I am here should tell you how well that went.

Some general info about my laptop before I go any further.

Dell Inspiron 1545 running Vista Home Premium 64 SP2 - 4gb of ram - Intel Core2 Duo CPU T6400 @ 2.00GHz

Now, as I've said, my laptop freezes like crazy unless I'm running in safe mode. My first thought was viruses and malware. I've scanned with AVG Free, MalWareBytes, and SpyBot, and didn't find anything wrong. I've also cleaned my registry using CCleaner. I thought that maybe my circuit board problem could have been the culprit as well for some reason, but I've got a shiny new part sitting in there, just installed yesterday with the utmost of care, and it is still freezing. Attempting a system restore proved fruitless, since for some reason I have no restore points. FML.

I did a little looking around and found the suggestion to run Verifier and got the expected BSOD out of it. Using a program called BlueScreenView, I retrieved this:

A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage
to your computer.

The problem seems to be caused by the following file: CLFS.SYS

DRIVER_VERIFIER_DETECTED_VIOLATION

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen,
restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow
these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed.
If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer
for any Windows updates you might need.

If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware
or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing.
If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart
your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then
select Safe Mode.

Technical Information:

*** STOP: 0x000000c4 (0x0000000000000000, 0x0000000000000000, 0x0000000000000000,

*** CLFS.SYS - Address 0xfffffa6016a29000 base at 0xfffffa6000660000 DateStamp

I've attached the .dmp file, just in case.

Anyway, I'm hoping I've finally found the source of the problem. This is getting really frustrating.

If anyone has any other ideas as to what the problem may be, please, by all means, let me know.

One more thing...if anyone recommends any software, keep in mind that I am a broke college student with no more money to spare. Freeware suggestions would be greatly appreciated, if possible.

Hello

Your BSOD file shows only one bsod file, we normally need more then one but I will do my best.

This is the stop code error that was showing, I will need a little more time to go through the whole report and will be back to you soon.

STOP Error 0x000000C4: DRIVER_VERIFIER_DETECTED_VIOLATION

STOP error 0xC4 is the general STOP code code for fatal errors found by Driver Verifier. STOP code 0x000000C4 may also display "DRIVER_VERIFIER_DETECTED_VIOLATION" on the same STOP message

Please turn off the driver verifier, this might fix your problem if not please follow the other instructions...

Your BSOD crash was due to your AVG anti-virus.

1. Do you have more then one anti-virus on your system if so there very well can be a conflick between them...

2. Are you current as far as SP1 or SP2...

I would recommend that you unhook your computer from the internet and uninstall your AVG and install MSE here is there link.

Anti-Malware, Virus, Spyware Protection | Microsoft Security Essentials

MSE is a great anti-virus software and it is 100% free, I also recommend that you install malwarebytes between the two this is all you will need to protect your computer, here is the link to malwarebytes and download the free version.

Malwarebytes : Free anti-malware, anti-virus and spyware removal download

Also if you would please keep us updated with your results. If we can help further please let us know.

administrator) and the kernel has enabled substantial checking of this driver.
If the driver attempts to corrupt the system, bugchecks 0xC4, 0xC1 and 0xA will
be among the most commonly seen crashes.

Ok I have the exact same computer as you do and experienced a very similar problem about a month ago. I don't know the exact thing that fixed it, but the last things I did before it magically stopped were: uninstall WinPatrol (if you happen to have downloaded and installed that program on your computer then that's probably what's causing the freezing. If you don't have it, I guess it was just a coincidence and irrelevant.) Then I reinstalled McAfee Total Protection (again, if you don't have that program, ignore that step) and finally I ran sfc /scannow from cmd prompt and restarted my computer. After I did these three things, all the horrible random freezing problems went away. Idk if this is the same problem you're having (since I still don't know exactly what caused my freezing problems), but figured I'd share that with you in case it is the same.

Otherwise, I'm sure Americancritic will get you through it. Hope this helps you :)
