Hi all, I have a severe problem with vista premium SP2.0 with just one partition. Vista was installing updates and supposed to shutdown last night. But, don't know what happened. All that I have seen is my child pressing buttons etc this morning. When I try to switch on before log in screen I get the error message Ordinal 2000 could not be located in the dynamic link library USER32.dll, with the title of the window displaying "LogonUI.exe - Ordinal not found", after logging in it comes up with another window with title "AtBroker.exe- ordinal not found" with the message -The Ordinal 2000 could not be located in the dynamic link library USER32.dll. Some more windows with messages "windows problem reporting has stopped working", "Transitions accessible technologies between desktops has stopped working". Also another window with title "explorer.exe ordinal not found" and message , Ordinal 2000 could not be located in the dynamic link library USER32.dll. All that I get is a black screen with the mouse pointer placed somewhere nothing happens when I move the mouse pointer. All that I can do is shutdown or restart. This is same even in safe mode. I have tried to restore to previous many restore points that I have, but none of them work. comes up with error trying to restore to previous restore point. I have tried to fix with a repair disk found online, nothing has progressed positively. I don't know what the problem is. I have done Memory Diagnostic tool. Nothing has been found. I have done Startup repair, which too found no errors. Any help is much appreciated, Thanks in advance KL

Thanks for replying. Yeah I can run UBUNTU, it works fine! Also, where is the copy of original OS stored in the laptop? This is Acer aspire laptop. Thanks in advance.

Thankyou. Is it possible to take a copy of the Acer OS backup from Ubuntu? There are lots of restore points in the laptop, but they are failing while trying to restore to old config. What could be the reason? How can I resolve this problem please. Thanks in advance to all.

The back up partition, is there for you to restore to factory specs (the way it was the day you bought the computer). Back up your stuff and then follow instructions to go back to factory specs. You dont need a copy nor can you take a copy of the backup. Just follow the instructions to return to factory specs.

Back up your book marks

Its caused by a system conflict. You have something installed in your system, that causes a problem. The shut down is a way of protectings your computer or software from damage.
Could be cause by conflicting software.
Go to search, by start button, type event viewer to view possible causes. Put cursor in left panel, adminstrative.
Its possible, unless backed up, event viewer for this event may become lost.

Thanks again Rich. But, nothing has been installed since last stable condition of the laptop, except for the updates it has/has not installed. The windows updates thing has been having problem installing updates recently. I can't even open firefox. no windows explorer not even command window. I can't see any start menu or task bar etc.. I can log in as admin pres ctl+ alt+del and ask it to shut down or restart. But, after pressing ctl + alt + del I can see some sort of button at bottom left corner(which I don't remember seeing before) called easy access, pressing which gives me same message like "Ordinal 2000 cannot be located ....". I think this is due to the recent updates or wrong way of switching off the laptop by the little one. I don't know what is happening. everything looks fine except for no start menu etc..which means it can't run anything. looks very strange! When I try to restore to previous point it fails and says, "system restore failed due to an unspecified error.Transaction support with in the specified file system resource managher is not started or was shut down due to an error (0x80071A91). When i did start up repair diagnosis it says "boot status indicates that the OS booted successfully" it hasn't found any error. The log says all the tasks/processes were successful.

Just a guess, but an eductated guess
If you can scan with the anti virus at least in safe mode do so.

thank you Rich
I don't know how to scan for viruses while the laptop doesn't let me do anything except for shutdown. would it be fine if I scan somehow from UBUNTU?
BTW I've done sfc / scan now which has said it has found some problems but, couldn't fix them. I see a folder called PRELOAD (from UBUNTU) I didn't see before, is it the preinstalled OS by any chance and can I write it to the disk and probably format the laptop completely and install it again if need be. I have a Vista repair disc downloaded from internet long back and when i try to instal it from there and give the OEM no fixed at the back of the laptop, it is not accepting it. I wonder Why? The OEM number too has problems it seems.

I can access command prompt from the option Safe mode with command prompt.

I'm not very comfortable with reinstalling, just in case it doesn't allow me (like it didn't accept the OEM no). Is there anything I could do from command prompt?

Thanks again
KL

If SFC has found unfixed errors, the next step is to run it 3 more times. It does not fix errors all at once. If the errors are still not corrected after the additional running, the next step is usually a repair. An install DVD is needed for that step.

If the repair install does not work, it may be best to save your stuff and then reinstall.
If it were me, I would buy an upgrade DVD of Seven and install Seven. You would have to determine if your computer is capable of handing Seven.
