BSOD on Clean Install of Vista 32 bit

I recently received a Dell Inspiron 1720 laptop with Vista Home Premium 32 bit OEM installed. There have been many BSOD errors over time and recently has become much worse. There are 50+ mini dump files from before I received the computer. All minidump files seem to refer to Windows system files causing the crash and all seemed to be related to memory errors.

I ran chkdsk /r and it found bad sectors on the hard drive. I ran the built in Dell diagnostic which also found disk errors as did Patition Wizard. I also ram memtest overnight and got no errors after 10 passes.

I replaced the hard drive with a new Seagate drive, re-installed Windows Vista SP1 OEM from the Dell supplied disk, installed the chipset, video, etc. drivers from the supplied Dell disk, and then ran Windows updates until Windows is now up to date with SP2 and all other updates.

Twice during the Windows updates the computer blue screened with code 0xC2 with BAD_POOL_CALLER. The errors still refer to ntoskrnl.exe causing the problem.

My next step was to attempt to update the video (Intel 965) driver and wireless and nic drivers to see if they were the problem. I'm connected to the internet to get Windows updates via a wireless connection.

I've not installed any antivirus software yet as I was waiting to get Windows fully updated first.

When trying to start IE9 it stops responding repeatedly and often won't start. When I ran the Windows_NT6_BSOD_jcgriff2 program to gather the crash information a message popped up along the way that said DirectX had stopped working. After many attamepts I was able to connect to the internet to get MSE downloaded and installed. I've stopped with any system changes and I'm posting this thread from another computer.

So I'm concerned that I've got a hardware problem. A fresh install of Vista with no programs installed should be more stable than this. In a matter of hours I've received the 2 blue screens and multiple program crashes.

I've attached the zip file as directed in the posting instructions. I would appreciate some insights into these mini dump files to understand what driver (if it is a driver) is causing the problem. Or is this looking more like a hardware problem?

I have many other minidump files saved from the old setup if you would like to see some of them.

Thanks very much for your time and expertise.

A quick review of your dump reports indicate the problem was due to your anti virus.
But as you indicated you have not installed any anti virus in the new set up.
Please go to search and type cmd
In cmd type driverquery and look for mcupdate.dll. If there please post the information.

For my own education, what was it in the dump report that indicated the problem was antivirus?

mcupdate.dll is not in the list when I ran driverquery. Since my first post I was able to download and install Microsoft Security Essentials. Not sure if that would have an effect on these results. I can uninstall if necessary to debug.

Thanks for the quick reply. I've also started to go through your first post and looking at those links.

The reports which you submitted, indicate mcupdate is the cause.
mcupdate.dll - What is mcupdate.dll?

Well, I'm at a loss. There was no antivirus installed at the time (MSE now is) and nothing from Network Associates or Virus Scan Enterprises is on the computer.

I ran a search on mcupdate* and found several references to mcupdate.exe (Windows Media Center Store Update Manager) and mcupdate_GenuineIntel.dll (Intel Microcode Update Library). Could it be related to this at all?

Any thoughts on how to proceed? I'm unsure where to go next.

Bottom line, all this talk is just academic. If I understand you correctly the reports are prior to the clean install. I need the reports that happen now.

The report reports code C2, normally a driver. No clear driver was given. Can you run driver verifier with the hope that we can uncover the true culprit.

Driver Verifier

I'd suggest that you firstbackup your data and then make sure you've got access to another computer soyou can contact us if problems arise. Then make a System Restore point (so youcan restore the system using the Vista/Windows 7 Startup Repair feature).

In Windows 7 you can make a Startup Repair disk by going to Start....AllPrograms...Maintenance...Create a System Repair Disc - with Windows Vistayou'll have to use your installation disk or the "Repair your computer"option at the top of the Safe Mode menu .

Then, here's the procedure:
- Go to Start and type in "verifier" (without the quotes) and press Enter
- Select "Create custom settings (for code developers)" and click"Next"
- Select "Select individual settings from a full list" and click"Next"
- Select everything EXCEPT FOR "Low Resource Simulation" and click"Next"
- Select "Select driver names from a list" and click "Next"
Then select all drivers NOT provided by Microsoft and click "Next"
- Select "Finish" on the next page.

Reboot the system and wait for it to crash to the Blue Screen. Continue to useyour system normally, and if you know what causes the crash, do thatrepeatedly. The objective here is to get the system to crash because
Driver Verifier isstressing the drivers out. If it doesn't crash for you, then let it run for atleast 36 hours of continuous operation (an estimate on my part).

If you can't get into Windows because it crashes too soon, try it in Safe Mode.
If you can't get into Safe Mode, try using System Restore from yourinstallation DVD to set the system back to the previous restore point that youcreated.

DriverVerifier - Enable and Disable

On the last screen there is an option to select a physical disk from the full list. The C: drive is currently unchecked. Do I check it? I assume so but want to make sure.

Thanks for all of your help. I very much appreciate it.

Scratch that request. It wouldn't let me proceed without selecting the C: drive.

My Computer

Got another blue screen, this time 0xC1 and SPECIAL_POOL_DETECTED_MEMORY_CORRUPTION.

I have been using the computer today and installing programs. It has been very unstable with Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer errors. "Windows Explorer has quit working" and the sort. Many applications crash at the end of an installation or quit responding. I've been using Google Chrome for downloads and internet browsing. It's more stable.

I was sorting some bookmarks in Firefox 8 when this latest crash happened. I've tried to duplicate it but can't do so.

I re-ran the tools for posting a BSOD report and have attached them here.

Thank you again for your time and any insights you can offer.

Keep the reports coming, each gives a small clue. If they are all different, I would suspect hardware. Just post when it happens again.
Did you take a good ram and test each slot?

Thank you. Will do. Regarding the RAM, no I didn't. I guess I was content with 10 passes showing no errors. But that's a good idea.

Right now I'm re-installing Windows again. It was just too unstable and I think a key Windows file was corrupted when a BSOD occurred while doing a Windows update. SFC reported dxgi.dll was damaged and it couldn't repair it as the version in the store was also corrupt.

So far I'm past SP2 with only one crash (did a restore to a point before the crash before carrying on) and am finishing off the Windows Updates. So far the OS is better and the system is usable but there's obviously still crashes. This most recent one didn't write a dump file. I'm capturing a system image before carrying on since I've got a pretty good point to launch from now if things go sideways again.

I'm kind of thinking this is a hardware issue that rears its ugly head from time to time and is going to take time to sort out, if at all. But if I can get Windows installed with reasonable stability it will help a lot. It was basically unusable before.

My Computer

Another crash report.

This time the computer was unattended and no programs were running.

Windows is better but still unstable. It's fully updated to SP2 with all drivers as new as possible. Random errors occur: superfetch has stopped working, Windows Host Process has stopped working, .NET Framework has stopped working....

I ran memtest for another 9 hours without any errors.

I've done all that I can do and have a computer that limps along. I'm still inclined to think it's a hardware problem and am going to move to get a new computer. Not going to invest anymore time or money into this one unless something else comes to mind to try, or unless someone has another suggestion.

For completeness, here's the latest crash reports.

Thanks for all your help.

Cheers.

My Computer

I need special software to read the dump reports, I am not at home now. I will read it tomorrow. But, if you have a crash after reinstalling, its hardware (the computer) we will concentrate on that starting tomorrow, after reading the reports
Post somehing here, tomorrow, so I dint forget.
