Hello sluisocelot and welcome to the forums

Do you have McAfee installed? I believe this is causing your crash. Try uninstalling it with this removal tool:

How to uninstall or reinstall supported McAfee consumer products using the McAfee Consumer Products Removal tool (MCPR.exe)

Replace it with this:

Microsoft Security Essentials - Free Antivirus for Windows

It is a brilliant AV that is very highly regarded among this (any many other) forum(s). Plus it's free!

See how your computer performs and let us know how it goes!

Hi,

This appears to be down to two drivers: -

AsDsm.sys
mfehidk.sys
Look here for Microsoft advice on AsDsm.sys blue screen of death - Microsoft Answers

And here for advice on mfehidk.sys https://community.mcafee.com/message/220062 if that applies to your system?

Guys,

Thanks for the quick response.

McAfee antivirus removal isn't going well, in fact it doesn't want to be removed. I'm going to investigate those links further.

Right now i'm playing with the system restore points, sometimes the BSOD isn't triggered and I should make my move on the removal on that opportunity.

You can expect more sitreps later.

Hmm, that's odd. Usually the removal tools seem to work pretty well. Is it giving any error codes/messages?

Ok, playing with those system restore points in safe mode with networking services didn't work.

Running the MCPR.exe tool gives:
Code:
Enterprise Software Detected. See log for more details.

This is a personal notebook so no group policies or other stuff coming from Active Directory or others. I also tried the program and features function to delete mcafee, but it doesn't work. It displays a warning messagebox (it is a translation from the original message which is in dutch):

Code:
Could not get access to windows installer service. This occurs when Windows installer is not properly installed. Contact supporting personnel for help.

Should I consider to digg deeper or clean the system and install Windows 7 ?

EDIT: It seems like it is a Mcafee 8.5 Enterprise edition the MCPR doesn't work on these cats. found some uninstall instructions at the following site:
https://kc.mcafee.com/corporate/index?page=content&id=KB50602. I keep you posted.

EDIT 2: I followed this solution to get rid of that software. Currently rebooting.

EDIT3: Still getting the BSOD. However I'm getting a different BSOD error:

You mention having an enterprise version of McAfee, was this installed by your company? If so, you shouldn't remove it!

Can you attach the minidumps like before please?

Hi,

the enterprise software was installed by myself. I had a copy of that laying around so I just installed it.

Attached you'll find the new dumps. Thanks !

Hi,

That's good! I didn't want you to get in trouble with your boss ;)

Right, I'm seeing a lot of trouble with a driver, asdsm.sys, which is a component of ASUS Data Security Manager. Do you use this software?

Haven't used it, I'm removing it.

The background story is my mom bought this notebook for her personal use. I guess in 2009 I installed the McAfee 8.5i on it. The notebook fell somewhere in 2010 and from that moment things went bad. The BSOD popped up. Until recently the notebook was just getting dust in the closet, asked after the notebook last week and I grasped the opportunity to make it mine. Such nice hardware, you can't refuse that.

Good, it's been reported to cause a fair few crashes. Let us know how it goes!

I don't blame you! From what I can see the specs look good, and you'd have to be silly to turn down a free computer! ;)

Hmm, removed that ASUS Data Security Manager.

Mcafee still is present and doesn't give any conflict. I'm going for that restore point. I hope no BSOD pops up.

Hi Tom,

I'm immediately going to create a system restore point. However, I assume Vista creates one automatically.

So far so good, no BSOD popping up. Updating my Anti virus and doing some Windows Updates.

Regarding the post, I've seen it and wasn't able to find the driver. Will look for it further this evening.

Hi sluisocelot,

Sounds like a great plan :)

That's excellent news! Well I hope it stays that way, I'll give it a day or two before marking this thread as solved.

Tom lock this topic down, it has been solved by uninstalling the ASUS security software. McAfee is still present on the system and doesn't give a conflict.

Thanks for the advice !
