Solved BSOD Help

Larbfit

New Member
Hello

I am running Vista x64on my Dell and have the original OS that came preinstalled. I purchased the computer in December 2009.

I was getting the BSOD occasionally, but recently more frequently.

I would really appreciate any assistance.

Thank you,

Larry

Both MSINFO32 and the memory dumps suggest an issue with your Avast antivirus.
Please do this:
Anti-Virus Removal:
Please do the following:
- download a free antivirus for testing purposes: Free AntiVirus
- uninstall the antivirus software from your system (you can reinstall it, if so desired, when we're done troubleshooting)
- remove any remnants of the antivirus software using one of these free tools: Antivirus Uninstallers
- IMMEDIATELY install and update the free antivirus
- check to see if this fixes the BSOD's
NOTE: NEVER run more than 1 anti-virus, firewall, Internet Security/Security Center application at the same time.
The memory dumps also suggest an issue with your Hauppage TV card drivers. Please:
- download a fresh copy of the software/drivers from the Hauppage website ( Hauppauge Computer Works Product Selector )
- uninstall the current software/drivers from your system
- install the freshly downloaded software/drivers
- monitor for further BSOD's

The errors are suggestive of a software/driver issue - but they either aren't definitive (since they blame multiple causes, or there are multiple problems (less likely). Hardware issues are also possible, but IMO are less likely than the preceding causes.

Your N

I noted a wireless device that appears to have been removed. Is that the case? If so, what's the make and model of the wireless device?

So, if the above steps don't fix things, then try running Driver Verifier according to the instructions on this page: Driver Verifier Settings

Further info on BSOD error messages is available here: BSOD Index

The following info is just FYI, I've already addressed the issues that I saw in the above paragraphs:
3RD PARTY DRIVERS PRESENT IN THE DUMP FILES
- Create a System Restore Point prior to doing any of this. DO NOT mess with the drivers themselves - leave the Windows\System32\drivers directory alone unless we specifically direct you to it!
- Please either update the older drivers from the device manufacturer's website - or uninstall them from your system. Reference links are included below.
- DO NOT use Windows Update or the Update Drivers function of Device Manager.
- Please feel free to post back about any drivers that you are having difficulty locating.
- Windows Update exceptions may be noted below for Windows drivers.

My Computer

Thank you John... I completed phase one by removing Avast and using the tool to remove any remnants. I was running Avast and Microsoft Security Essentials, so hopefully this will fix the issue.

I ran CCleaner and noticed the following entries relating to Avast when scanning for issues:

Open with Application Issue "C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast5\aswChLic.exe""%1" HKCR\avastsoundsfile\shell\open

Obsolete software key AVAST Software HKCU\Software\AVAST Software

Missing MUI Reference C:\Program Files\AlwilSoftware\Avast5\Setup\avast.setup HKCU\Software\Classes\LocalSettings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\MuiCache

Missing MUI Reference C:\ProgramFiles\AlwilSoftware\Avast\aswRegSvr64.exeHKCU\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\MuiCache

Should I remove these?

I wouldn't bother with them. But, if you do remove them, make a backup of the registry first (using System Restore). I've had issues in the past when I overcleaned my registry - so now I just leave it alone.

I didn't notice that you also had MSSE installed. Please only install 1 antivirus at a time. It will, at best, slow the system down - and at worst it'll cause BSOD's.
