Solved BSoD with nvidia GeForce GT 430 graphics card

Hello All,

Over the last 2 days I have been trying to install a new graphics card, PNY nvidia GeForce GT 430 on my HP Pavilion Elite m9515y Desktop PC. I removed the previous graphics card (nvidia GeForce 9600 GS) uninstalled the nvidia drivers and ran Driver Sweeper to clean up anything that was remaining. I shut off my anti-virus, selected Windows to ask before updating drivers and to ask before downloading and installing updates. I also visited the nvidia website and downloaded the latest driver 285.62 to my desktop.

Unfortunately, upon installing the GT 430 card I am now envcountering 100% of the time the BSoD shortly after booting up or during driver installation process (both with the installation disk and with the driver I downloaded. This happens both in normal and safe mode.

I have received a number of different messages on the blue screen such as: Page_Fault_IN_NONPAGED_AREA, MEMORY_MANAGEMENT, THE_DRIVER_IS_MISMANAGING_SYSTEM_PTES, etc.

All returns to normal when I put the original card back in. I have attached the requested BSoD dump and system info as well as the system health report (buow-vista.html).

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

You have given us several BSODs. The most recent indicates this to be the problem driver. Update driver.

Ahcix64s.sys file descriptionProductname: AMD Technology AHCI Compatible Controller Description: AMD Technology AHCI Compatible Controller Driver for Windows - AMD64 platform Company: AMD Technologies Inc. The driver version that you are using is rather old 2008. See if there is a more current version.

Another rather curent one indicates Symatec to be the problem. This is very common.
Make a system restore point. Uninstall Symantec and use Microsoft security Essentials instead.
If that is not the cause, you can go back to where you were with system restore.

I noticed that the GT 430 requires a PCI-E 2 x16 slot. Looking at the motherboard for your system, I'm not sure it meets that requirement. It justs says PCI Express x 16 and the others are PCI Express x1. You might ask HP.

In addition, does your card need two plugs or one? Unfortunatley, the NVIDIA specs don't mention it.

Firstly..... Pci-e 2.0 is backward compliant so it'll work no problems. I've run 2.0 gpu' in 1.0 slots for rs.

2... Nvidia doesn't say how many plugs because it doesn't need one. It baically is a 9600 replacement.

I think, do as Rich said.. Update all your drivers for your motherboard.

Have you tried safe mode? It should work if its a driver conflict thingy.

There was a problem with NVIDIA 4 series cards that use software (I think it was called Optimus) that handed off the function of the graphics card to the cpu. However, i think they were Intel cpus and, to my knowledge, the problem was primarily on Dell systems. The fix for that was to make some sort of setting in control panel to specify that the card was always to be used. Sorry that my memory is sketchy. Just wanted him to be aware of a potential issue.

Thanks richc46. I'll give it a whirl right now and see if I can find an updated driver and uninstall Symantec. I appreciate the recommendations.

Hi wither 3...the nvidia card originally installed with the system required two plugs but the GT 430 is only the PCI Express x16.

I have tried safe mode and I can usually get further along in the process. However, I still end up with BSoD during the GT 430 driver installation. I'll let everyone know how it goes with the driver updates and Symantec uninstall.

I uninstalled Symantec and installed the nvidia GT 430 card. I tried to update the AMD drivers in regular mode but was unable to to do due to BSoD. I rebooted in safe mode and tried once again to update the AMD drivers but the AMD catalyst control panel could not load the detection application and the driver installation failed.

Thus, I removed the GT 430 card and in regular mode I was able to install the latest drivers available in both the AMD Catalyst packages and optional downloads (via ATI Catalyst)

After this was completed I restarted as instructed. I then shutdown and installed the GT 430 card yet again and started in regular mode. A prompt appeared that I did not have the proper AMD display driver and soon after this message I received the BSoD again.

I checked the drivers folder and the ahcix64s.sys has been updated to a 2009 version (previously 2008).
Since the AMD driver installation control panel is detecting my current system, I am wondering if it is not providing the proper driver updates as I am unable to connect the GT 430 card. Is this possible? The only way I can run the driver updates is to take out the GT 430 card otherwise I get BSoD everytime.

I have also attached the latest BSoD details generated after I uninstalled Symantec and updated the AMD drivers as described above.

Thanks in advance for all the help so far.

That could be a problem since the PCIe bus only provides 25 watts. The extra plugs can up that substantially. Take a look at the documentation to see if you can plug into your graphics card from your PSU. I can't see any connections on the card from the pictures.

I can't figure out why it's asking for a AMD display driver when you're using a NVIDIA card.

It's as if Vista is not treating it as a pnp device. Did you get an installation disc with the card?

Unfortunately the only connection is the PCI Express x16 on the GT 430 card...no supplemental power conenctions. My previous nvidia card (GeForce 9600 GS) had the PCI express connection along with a 2 pin plug that connected to the motherboard.

I received an installation disk but I get the BSoD during installation. When the new graphic card is installed I am unable to update/install any drivers as I always get BSoD. Even with the new card disabled and working off VGA display I get BSoD.

I would uninstall ATI Catalyst since it's for a AMD card.

Hmmm. I don't recall if the disk worked in safe mode. Let me give it a shot in safe mode and I will get back to you. When I install the new card it should appear in device manager under "display" correct? Should I keep the driver settings to ask before downloading and installing?

Thanks Patonb and wither 3. I'll uninstall catalyst, get the AMD Chipset drivers per your link, install the new card and run the installation disk from Safe Mode, and reboot to normal.

Patonb- unless it's got something to do with the motherboard being proprietary (as HP and all the others do), I wouldn't think he would have to use a graphics card driver from HP unless he had a laptop. Hopefully it will work out either way.
