My computer displays "BOOTMGR is compressed" when I try to start it

I have a Dell Inspirion 6000 laptop, with Vista as the operating system. Unfortunately, it was a gift and came without the disc. A couple of days ago I foolishly compressed the hard drive to save space. Now, when I start it up, before it loads the operating system, I get a black screen with the message:

"BOOTMGR is compressed Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart".

I can enter set up, when I push F12. I changed the boot order to start from a CD because, in a state of panic I used an UBUNTU disc to access my files and move anything that was important to a zip drive.

But, I'm curious, without the Vista disc, is it possible to repair my computer?
