Vista x64 hangs, have to cold reboot

Hello! My Vista x64 runs very slowly sometimes or hangs. Usually when I try to open my browser (mozilla). I tried reinstalling mozilla, I've tried running it without addons - doesn't help. i have tried installing chrome - it does the same thing.

this morning i woke it from sleep, clicked on my browser and it just sat - this hangs the entire PC. so i pressed the power button. when it was rebooted, i tried again to use the browser - this usually works, it didn't this morning and i had to reboot it again. then it worked fine. when the little circle is swirling, i have tried to access the task manager thru ctrl-alt-del but it says something about a security error and i can't access when it is hanging (i can access it other times using ctrl-alt-del) - i was hoping to cancel the firefox.exe in the processes.

I have run the following antivirus/antispywares (usually do this weekly) - drcureit, defender, spybot search & destroy, superantispyware, avast, eset, adware, malwarebytes. i have found things and removed them and rerun til it's clean.

i have run the following temp file cleaners - ccleaner, tfc (old timer)

i have defragged

anything else i can do short of re-installing vista or buying a new PC? :sa:

Hi acr1127,

We can try few steps. Try to go in safe mode and check if you are able to login in safe mode. Please use the following link for detailed instructions to go safe mode: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/123496-safe-mode.html

Check if the computer is working fine in safe mode.

Also, run the built-in diagnostics provided by the manufacturer on the computer to check if the hardware is working fine.

Please post back with the results.

sorry it took me so long to respond, i was trying a few things.
i tried booting in safe mode and safe mode with networking and i was able to logon with no problems. the hanging problem did not manifest itself, but i was only on for minutes instead of hours.

i do not have any built-in manufacturer diagnostics or at least i cannot find any. i looked at my device manager and there are no yellow exclamation points and all the hardware says it is functioning normally.

i will leave the PC on tonight in safe mode and see if i can get on tomorrow without it hanging.

any other suggestions? i ran all the antivirus/spyware/malware programs again this week and nada.
thanks for your help.

Hi acr1127,

Generally if the computer is working fine in safe mode it would be a software related issue.

We can try to do a clean boot to check if it would work, providing the link to do a clean boot for reference: How to perform a clean boot to troubleshoot a problem in Windows Vista or Windows 7

Run Microsoft fix-it for slow performance issue and check if the performance improves, here is the link for fix-it: Fix Windows system performance problems on slow Windows computers

Also, try to do SFC scannow and check if it fixes any corruption, please use the following link for detailed instructions:

Please post the results.
