display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered

Hi everyone

Like the title says, I got the "
display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered" error every 5 minutes or so. My screen freezes, turns black and is fine again and there's a little yellow warning triangle in the bottom right of my screen.
I allready tried the Nvidia automatic computer scan to find the most up to date drivers and installed them, this helped nothing.
I also tried Windows Fix it. This gave a slight improvement and brought me to the current situation (before that my screen crashed every minute)

I hope one of you guys knows the magic answer so my computer functions properly again..

Thanks in advance !
Sven

It's possible that the GPU is overheating. Is the fan running and the speed changing under load? Is the fan clean?

I think it is... It's kinda hard to hear. I'll try to check it in detail. I know the fan's clean because I've recently checked it...

If you download HMonitor, you can monitor the temperature of your card and the cpu.

/Overheating usually shuts down, but it's possible.

It may also be the card itself crapping out.

I agree with you in regards to a overheating CPU. However, a overheating GPU normally gives a BSOD.

Nope, mine have shut right off. Then again it was hitting 110C!

But usually overheating starts as lag as the gpu throttles, then kurplunk... Shuts off just like a cpu does.

I guess it's possible, but I doubt it's due to overheating. Because it starts happening the moment I power on my pc... So how hot can he get in 5 minutes ?

Ok, I followed your advice and the temperatures range from min 32°C (89°F) to max 53°C (127°F) This includes the motherboard, 4 cores, harddrives and graphics card.

The graphics card sits at 43°C (109°F). And this is after running my pc for some time and while playing a game. What do you think ?

You need to tax the card to 100% be for sure, but those are all fine.

I'm suspicious if the temperature isn't changing at all. There should be some variation.

I had an overheating problem with my GPU in my work station. The BSOD mentioned the same .dll that you mentioned). The pros at Dell recommended I reinstall Windows. I did that and have had only one BSOD since then and I know it was from overheating. I have no idea why reinstalling Windows reduced the problem.

The actual value does change a couple of degrees, I just summed up the Minimum and maximum values listed...
And I don't like to reinstall windows if it isn't an absolute necessity... I'm not to good with pc's and I'm not looking forward to the trouble involved with that... :/

Let's do it the old fashioned way. Shut down. Pull the graphics card and then reseat it. In the really old days, we would clean the contacts on the graphics card with a pencil eraser.
