desktop crashes

Hi guys.
I hope you can help me.
When I start the PC is everything Ok and it loads the desktop normally but when I try to open something like chrome shortcut or even the windows explorer it doesnt open and the blue circle near the pointer shows that something is loading . After while the following message appears: "windows explorer is not working. Windows is trying to fix it" (that kind of stuff). BUt it does anything and some seconds later all the desktop files and the bar on the bottom disappear and it shows only the background image and if i kept it would be there forever without changing.
I wonder what is wrong. It started to happen like 4 days ago, but the computer ended up working after a few tries (I turned off the computer holding the power button and tried again). Today i tryed like 7 times and it doesnt work.
Im actually worried if its due to overheating damage. My pc is a laptop and it traps dust really well and because it is a toshiba satellite, i almost need to disassemble the whole laptop to remove the dust, and i cant do it. So im conscious that sometimes it gets a bit warmer than it should.
There is any kind of hardware which is damage and is leading to this issue or is just sofware?
Thank you for your attention.

Lets try to see if we can get you running, assuming that it is software. Boot in safe mode, if you can use system restore to go back to good times.
