Flash Drive Won't Install

I ordered a SanDisk 4.0 GB Cruzer Micro USB Flash Drive with my Vostro 400 computer running Windows Vista 32 bit Home Premium Edition. When I inserted the Flash Drive in the USB port Windows asked me to install the driver for the device. There was no software included with the Flash Drive. I checked the box requesting Windows to look for a driver through the Windows Update feature. It came back and said no driver could be found for this device. I then went to the manufacturer's website but they don't have a driver listed for this particular Flash Drive. I called Dell and all they could tell me is that Windows should have recognized the device automatically. Any suggestions on how I can get Windows to recognize this device. My brother has the same identical computer and Flash Drive and his installed without a problem

Hi Buckeye, I'm a newbie to this site......

To answer your question, I had the same problem with a PNY 4gb flash drive doing the same thing (although I'm running Vista Home Premium 64 bit version). I found out that there is a fix to correct the problem....but unfortunately I can't find the exact link. I believe it is called the Hotfix, and is number 490114, if memory serves me correctly.

When you try to get your driver, Microsoft should send you a message giving you the option to download the Hotfix. It didn't work for me because my Vista got corrupted, and I had to do a full re-install...but, evidently, the fix does work for most people.

Again, I'm not sure of the number, but I think it was number 490114, or it might require the letters KB in front of it, so it might be KB490114. I hope this helps, sorry I can't rember exactly since I was doing twenty different things to correct my Vista. I'll post more info, if I get it.

The link above could help. But, the "whole" answer to your current, and other problems, that may crop up, might be to install all Vista reliability updates that you haven't installed (or SP1).

hmm I've got the same problem at the moment Got a new crucial 4gb flash drive and its suppose to be vista native but :/ vista just wont install the drivers for it :/ even when i point it to the system32 folder :/ I've got sp1(RC) installed and all the latest updates :/
Every time i plug it in it just constantly asks for the drivers asme with my keyboard actually n for the keyboard if i click ask me later it stops working :(
Also in the device manager the flash drive is "The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)

There is no driver selected for the device information set or element.

To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver"

Same problem here too, but with the Sandisk 8GB MicroSD with small USB Reader.

Im guessing the USB is not SDHC compatible, but no ideas on resolving it.

My previous SanDisk Cruzer Micro USB Flash Drive does not work with Vista. I have just bought SanDisk Cruzer Contour and it works with Vista64 just fine. However, the Zinio 3.4 reader for U3 still do not support Vista. Even a new Contour still sits collecting dust :(

I have had the same kind of problem with microSD cards and Vista Ultimate 64.

I have two SanDisk 12 in 1 readers. Both will read the microSD cards (in the larger carrier/adapter) on an XP Notebook computer. The notebook computer will also read the cards with its built-in reader.

Using the same SanDisk 12 in 1 readers on my Vista 64 system the microSD cards cannot be accessed even though the SanDisk reader posts a green light (but it does that even if just the carrier/adapter is inserted without the microSD card inserted).

Trying to access the microSD via Windows Explorer actually crashed Explorer and I had to reboot the Vista system to fully restore it.

Vista 64 reads SanDisk Extreme III CD cards via these same two SanDisk readers perfectly.

The microSD card works fine in my camera using the larger carrier and in my cell phone (no carrier is needed) as well.

Very strange.

Not installing may be a blessing! My Scandisk Cruzer Micro 2.0 GB works. Then vista fails to turn it off. Yet says it is safe to remove. Then distroys the data, so when I put it into a XP machine It says unsafe eject then after a few times of that, XP said It was a unformated Drive. Even after running disk repair after each notice. Is there a Flash Drive that works with VISTA?
