I have a new laptop. The CD drive was working before, and gives a message that no cd rom is found now. I have done the windows updates and they show that it was updated. No cd drive shows up with the drives. Help!

In the Device Manager, I am getting a code 39. that the driver is corrupted or missing.

You'll want to start out running an SFC /Scannow to check your system for corrupted files. See http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/66978-system-files-sfc-command.html

The reason I say this is because, by default, Vista contains drivers for most optical (CD/DVD) drives. If your drive is a Blu-Ray drive, then you'll need to see about re-installing the drivers in Vista from your laptop manufacturer, but it sounds more like corrupted files, and this will help determine if something is indeed wrong with the files on your system or not.

Thank you for replying! I found a solution in the help menu. Apparently, when windows was updated, there was a glitch of some kind in the system. It caused a high and low filter to hide the cd rom from windows. That is the best way I can understand it. I was able to follow the directions and delete the filters. It is working now.
Thanks for taking the time to help!

Hi Bub

I believe that these are the instructions that she's referring too:

1. Start Registry Editor - Click the Start button - immediately type "regedit" (without quotations) and click regedit.exe in the search results

2. Locate the UpperFilters value under the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

3. Right Click on the UpperFilters in the right side pane, click Delete, and then click OK.

4. Locate the LowerFilters value under the same key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

5. Right Click on the LowerFilters in the right side pane, click Delete, and then click OK.

6. Quit Registry Editor.NOTE: After you remove the Upperfilters value and the Lowerfilters value, if you notice lost functionality in a particular program, such as CD recording software, you may need to reinstall that software. If the problem recurs, consult with the software vendor for assistance.

7. Restart your computer.

I recommend to do one at a time and reboot to see if that fixes it, and start with the High filter entry first.
Also BE VERY CAREFUL that you get the right key here!!!! There are many very similar keys all around this one, so be sure you have the exact numbers and that in the "Class" value in the right pane, it lists CDROM and the Default value is DVD/CDROM Drives.

Hope this helps

I quote another solution similar to the 1 above.... however please do be careful when navigating the registry files
How to fix Code 39 error
with DVD/CD-ROM drives in Windows XP or Vista
I was fixing a computer the other day and ran across the following error in Device Manager on the CD-ROM drive.

"Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)"

Because of this error, the drive did not show up in My Computer and the customer was unable to burn CDs or read any CDs.

I uninstalled the drive from Device Manager, rebooted the computer, and the problem remained, so obviously it appeared to be a registry issue that I would have to solve.
If you are receiving this Code 39 error and your CD or DVD drive is missing and has a yellow exclamation mark in Device Manager, I hope this information is useful.
To solve this Code 39 error, follow these instructions:
NOTE: After removing these registry keys and rebooting, it may be necessary to reinstall any CD or DVD recording applications.
1) Close all open programs

2) Click on Start, Run, and type REGEDIT and press Enter

3) Click on the plus signs (+) next to the following folders

  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
  • SYSTEM
  • CurrentControlSet
  • Control
  • Class
  • {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
4) This folder is the DVD/CD-ROM Drive Class Description in the registry. Look for any of the following names in the right hand column.

  • UpperFilters
  • LowerFilters
  • UpperFilters.bak
  • LowerFilters.bak
5) If any of the above keys shown in step 4 are listed, right-click on them and choose Delete

6) After deleting the keys, close the Registry Editor

7) Reboot your computer

8) Open My Computer and check to see if your CD or DVD drives have returned. You may also want to open Device Manager and verify that the yellow exclamation and error code on the CD or DVD drive is gone.

Another possible CD/DVD issue you may want to investigate

i think on windows xp x64 i have to used that problem, but luckly was easy to fix, i have a kodak easyshare digital camera and i used to install the old drivers since it came with a cd, and when i managed to install the 32 bits drivers on the 64 bits plataform, the camera worked perfectly, but my cd/dvd drives dissapear, i tried every easy solution, since in the device manager it appear as recognized but i think with the same error code 39 or something like that (it was a long time ago) at the start i didnt know why this was happening, but after i think in the help i read something about drivers making conflict or something (windows xp help) so i download the updated drivers for the digital camera (apparently those kind of drivers work under 32 and 64 bits it doesnt appear to matter since its only to access the battery state of the camera and the memory beeing internal or a memory stick, its really simple) so as i was sayng, i updated, reboot and by magic my cd/dvd drives appear to be working perfectly, with the same drivers showing those errors, so i just wanted to add that maybe it where more simple to check that all the drivers work under 32 or 64 bits and be updated, since maybe it can fix those kind of issues, very weird in this case since the drivers work only when i plug my digital camera on a usb port, and not always like for example the cd/dvd drives lol

Thank you all soooo much.

Normally I don't take the time to register for these forums, but I have had a badazz laptop for months now, and I got this error in the first few weeks of having it (and have dealt with being cdromless since).

I tried to fix it, to no avail, and finally in a fit of aggravation I looked it up one more time and found this. Fixed in minutes.

Thanks again all, really,

Hi all!
I had the problem described for about 3 mos. now. I tried the suggestion indicated by Chappy. After the reboot bingo! What can I say? Thanks a million!

thank you so much!!! i started trying to address this problem yesterday and this fixed it! I actually have two disk drives shown (even though I only have one), but that's fine, as long as the one that was there before is there now. thanks again!
