USB Drivers for Garmin Nuvi 2009 Map Update

I am running Vista 64 on an Asus M2N-SLI Deluxe motherboard (Nividia chipset). I downloaded the 2009 map update for my Garmin Nuvi760 (from Garmin.com). I put all the updates from the Garmin site on the GPS without any problems but I cannot install the 2009 map update using Vista 64. I spent over an hour with a Garmin technical rep who remotely took control of my computer but he also could not install or copy the map file (over one gigabyte in size). He finally came to the conclusion the Garmin drivers would not work with my system under Vista 64 for transferring large files. He advised me to use Windows XP. I had a old disk drive with windows XP installled and I tried it. I was able to sucessfully install they map update using Windows XP.

Has anyone else had any problem with the USB drivers using Vista 64?

As a follow up, I had the TomTom 720 GPS and that unit had no problems with Vista 64. I was able thru the USB cable to back up the contents of the TomTom (over two GB) using the TomTom utility.

I'm having problems installing the 2009 Norh America updates on my Garmin c340. I have Vista Ultimate 32. When I click on the downloaded file, it freezes my computer. I can extract the file in safe mode but can't get the garmin to connect in the safe mode. I have ordered the disk for another $10 to see if that works. If not I plan to visit my daughters XP computer to load the file.

I found the solution for downloading the 2009 North Ameriac map update for my Garmin c340. The file is over 2 GB large and it take Windows Defender from 20 to 30 minutes to scan the file before extracting it. It was taking so long, I thought the computer was freezing. Just click the file and wait and wait and wait till it starts extracting. (Thats with Vista)

I though the readers of this forum might find these e-mails with Garmin technical support informative, amusing, and frustrating in their lack of understanding.

Subject: Re: Vista 64 (AMD) not compatible with USB

Unfortunately you are incorrect - you have already created the correct drivers - it is used in you 2009.11 map update program. With these drivers you do not have any problems! You need to use these drivers. They are in the folder called USB drivers and in a subfolder called AMD64. Microsoft developed Vista 64 for both Intel and AMD and AMD has about 40 percent of the 64 bit processor market. It is up to the vendor (Garmin) to supply the proper drivers for compatablity. (TomTom does not have an issues with Vista 64 or AMD). Do you really wish to cut out 40% of your market by saying it it only Intel compatible, if so I will be happy to post your reply on the internet (and also forward it to AMD). Actually it is a simple issue since you have already developed the correct drivers (I guess your software people realize they need to be AMD compatible) you just need to incorporate these dirvers into your Webupdate installatio program!

,

Thank you for contacting Garmin International.
From what you are telling me, it is AMD that need to create the drivers for you. If this is only a problem with this processor, then that company needs to provide you with a solution. As I stated we are compatible with Vista 64-bit using Intel. We recommend the Intel processor for our units.

About six months ago I spent over two hours with Garmin technical support trying to load the 2009 maps on my Garmin Nuvi 760. We determined that Vista 64 (on some computers) would not work properly with the map updater. This was told to me by Garmin that Vista 64 has problems with some computers with the Garmin update. I had to put my old hard drive with Windows XP in my computer in order to update the maps. On my now Garmin unit the Nuvi 265WT I was able to update the maps using Vista 64 becuase it ca,e with special drivers for the AMD 64 for Vista. You need to update your drivers gor Vista 64 with the AMD processor. I have looked online and noticed many people with the AMD processor have the same problem under Vista 64. Note small files are able to be transferred, it is the larger files such as the 4.80 software update that has problems. This problem also occured on my Nuvi 760.

Thank you for contacting Garmin International.

Our unit uses standard Windows drivers and the unit is compatible with this version of Vista. The problem you are having has nothing to do with the Garmin unit.

: I tried the updater software to update my Nuvi 265WT and it will not update to 4.80. Your USB support for Vista 64 with the AMD CPU does not allow for large file transfers. You need to write new USB drivers.

I have not used the map updater but have updated the software on my garmin without a problem. I have also backed the software up on my second harddrive inase of failure. You can treat the Garmin as a USB stick. No one would think to look for documents on a garmin;)

I understand it should just be recognized as a USB device (just a a USB stick) but for large files it will not work. Garmin technical support several months ago took control remotely of my computer and tried to do a manual transfer of the large map file - it would not work. They filnally admitted that some Vista 64 computers are having troubles transfering larger files. It appears they have found a solution with the map update program by I could not update the software to the latest version on my Vista 64 (AMD) machine.
