Is there a way to install drivers from the recovery cd command prompt

Situation in short: I cannot access my windows stuff any other way than using the Vista Recovery thing on the cd, to fix this I think(pretty sure) that I have to reinstall the new driver I was installing(newest driver for 8800GT, 178.something) or jump back to any of my older ones. This would be pretty easy to fix if I could get the device manager up and running somehow, but apparently you cant do that in Recovery mode command prompt.

or can you. or is there any other way to fix this?

Hi Mneh,

Your using DVI right? If ou can switch the cabel to VGA it will solve the black screen issue and also let you access Device manager, You can access it via SafeMode too ;)

Hi mneh,

Pretty sure your 8800gt has a vga output - assuming your monitor has a vga input, you just need to get hold of a vga cable.

Hope it helps SIW2

Get a DVI-VGA cable and connect it to your monitor. Hit F8 on start up. Then, you can boot into VGA only mode. You can add/remove your video drivers. Restart. Reinstall the correct driver.

My 8800GT has 2 DVI ports,

Tried this:
Connecting to a monitor with DVI to VGA cable (monitor has one DVI and one VGA port).

Possible modes when pressing f8 are the same as always:

  • Safe Mode
  • Safe Mode with Networking
  • Safe Mode with Command Prompt

  • Enable Boot Logging
  • Enable low-resolution video (640x480)
  • Last Known Good Configuration (advanced)
  • Directory Services Restore Mode
  • Debugging Mode
  • Disable automatic restart on System failure
  • Disable Driver Signature Enforcement.

  • Start Windows Normally
No VGA-only mode as far as I can see, any thoughts?

Hi,

Will it let you go into Safe mode now ? If it does, you can go to msconfig, and under the Boot tab, tick Base video, apply and ok - you can also untick the video drivers under the Startup tab apply and ok - then go to device manager and uninstall the graphics drivers.
Then restart. Reinstall the correct driver.

no it doesn't let me into any kind of mode, nothing has changed pretty much.

Edit: what I mean is that I get the black screen, white mouse pointer -thing in whatever mode I choose.

Do you have another older video card you can install? One with VGA. Then, you can access your files and run a driver cleaner on your video drivers.
