Pointer frozen in middle of screen

Lat night I turned on my Acer comp. At first a green screen came up with someting I never saw before/ "Acer was trying to fix a startup error." It did in fact fix it and then it went on to my screen saver login. I could log in and detect my wireless connection and MSN came up. But my mouse is frozen in the middle of the screen I tried to do a sys restore but it only allows me to restore it to 73opm last nite. That is when the Acer fix went in. I have heard about the pointer being frozen before,,Any ideas? Please :)

Could there be a hardware issue, you think? You may want to run the memory diagnostics tool (search for it in windows Help and Support) as well as a hard disk test. Do you get any errors in the reliability monitor or event log that could point in some particular direction?

Hmmm, Laptops and I don't really get along but I would try to get into safe mode and see if you can restore further back from there?.

I sure looks like a virus/worm/malaware but it could as simple as a driver corruption.

Things I would try in Safe Mode:

1.- Restore from it and pray to God (hard) that this is all it takes ;)

2.- Uninstall the drivers for your mouse and after rebooting, Vista will try to install generic ones that you may use.

3.- get a hold of a program called "Malawarebytes", install it and run it in safe mode as well but after you have updated to the latest definitions.

Come back and tell us if that fixed your issue so others can take advantage and use it.

Why do you want to disable System Restore? I thought you wanted to go back further with the help of SR. If you disable System Restore, you will loose all restore points.

The reason I was going to disable SR is because the only date it allows me to go to is yesterday and that puts me right back to where the problem began(frozen pointer and unfunctioning touchhpad mouse. Since the comp boots up/asks for my password/finds my wireless signal and goes to my default page of MSN I was hoping it was not malwatre or a Virus. I have Micro Trend Virus and Spyware always running and it always catches things. Is there another way to force the SR to a specific date? Thx to all!!!!I will try in safe mode and I will tell you how it goes. It seems like a lot of people have this problem of the frozen mouse and yhe pointer stuck in the middle of the screen, :)

Hello,
I looked into the situation more and figured out by trial and error how do navigate with just my key board/ i got to mouse settings and im getting an error that the synaptics pointing devices' driver may be corrupted or missing. Does anyone know how to find a guide to navigate with just the keyboard? Also how would I reset the driver for the touchpad/mouse? Getting closer!!!
Any help would be appreciated and I think this will help others as I have seen this prob asked several times on google:)
Thx

It seems to me that you are swimming against the current, don't get me wrong, at times... doing it the hard way is the only way to learn.

Why don't you do the next best thing and ask a buddy to download the drivers needed and then you just install them on your laptop?

Why not try the System File Checker?
You could also try to unistall the Mouse drivers from the Device Manager. Then go to [Action] - [Scan for Harware Changes] to try re-installing it.

If you search for "Keyboard shortcuts" in Windows Help you can find several lists with shortcuts.
