Vista Tutorial - Disk Drive

Hi Folks:

It's been a while since I dropped by.

I have a slight problem with my CD/DVD drive. Every so often when I load a disk a get no response from autoplay. When I open My Computer, I find that the drive letter has changed from E to F for no apparent reason. I've gone into the Computer Management file and changed the letter back to E, but the system still won't read the disk. I get the application back in service by running a system restore, but I'm just wondering if anybody knows why this problem pops up. Is it just one of those ghost glitches that float around in Vista? It's not a big deal, but it's annoying.

Did this issue occurs only in reading audio disks or any disks(video, softwares, etc.)?
Try autoplay fix and see if its able to fix any such issues. Download link is here.

You can also try to solve the problem with the disc drive uninstalling the all drivers. It should help.

Type cmd into start menu search box, then right click on the command prompt and run it as administrator.
In the command prompt type SET DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES=1, next type devmgmt.msc to open the Device Manager.

In the manager, click View and select Show Hidden Devices. Under the DVD/Cd-ROM drives you would see drivers on the list, to remove the driver just right click the one and choose Uninstall. After rebooting Windows will find and install it again. It should fix your problem.

In addition to what Martee say, you could also try and update the firmware of your DVD drive so see if it fixes the problem.

To Dinesh: It won't read any disk. This is a real sporadic thing and there is no real pattern to when it occurs. Sometime it's a couple of months between incidents and at other times it will happen twice in two weeks. Like I said, it's no big deal, I was just curious as to why it happens.
