Network drivers

hi,
Upgraded a laptop sometime back from xp to vista, the upgraded completed successful. However the network drivers (LAN) showed an exclamation mark. When I tried to reinstall the drivers it keeps on pooping up that the drivers am trying to install are already updated (installed). But the exclamation mark keeps there and keeps the LAN card not working. The roll back button is grayed out.
I left the laptop and I used the wireless card.
Now lastly I also upgrade another laptop and the same case happened like the one above.
Please I need your help. i have the right drivers bt they cant be installed. what should i do?

Are you using the administrator account to update the drivers?
Have you tried updateing in safe mode?
