Installed Intel Chipset - BSOD on restart

Hello all,

I seem to be in somewhat of a pickle and as a last resort I'm posting on here to see if someone may be able to help me.

I recently had to install a new motherboard and processor (my Asus m2r32-mvp broke) and the gentleman at the store recommended I use the Asus P5Q-E with a Intel Core 2 Quad. My video card is an ATI Radeon HD2900.

I intalled both and it worked perfectly, so I decided to intall the chipset on the CD provided. It installed, but when the computer rebooted my screen went all funky after the windows loading screen(right before desktop) and I got a BSOD with the error code 0x116. I knew that this was a graphics driver thing, so I booted my computer up in safe mode and attempted to install the latest drivers. I couldn't because the detection driver for the installer failed, so I removed my graphics driver with driver sweeper.

Without Any graphics driver, windows booted up normally without any problems (except some flicker every now and then) but of course, without a graphics driver my computer is an expensive piece of junk.

I tried installing the latest drivers Then, but whenever I install the driver my computer does the same thing. Strange flickering with ugly bars going across the screen, and then a BSOD 0x116.

Here is the minidump:
VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE (116)
Attempt to reset the display driver and recover from timeout failed.
Arguments:
Arg1: 873ac008, Optional pointer to internal TDR recovery context (TDR_RECOVERY_CONTEXT).
Arg2: 8fa1ea14, The pointer into responsible device driver module (e.g. owner tag).
Arg3: 00000000, Optional error code (NTSTATUS) of the last failed operation.
Arg4: 00000002, Optional internal context dependent data.

Funny thing is in the minidump the faulting file is atikmdag.sys and if you search here for that you get how to remove it here http://www.vistax64.com/vista-installation-setup/23001-bsod-atikmdag-sys.html
Hope this helps

Thing is, I am able to boot up in safe mode and remove Atikmdag.sys and it will boot up nicely on restart, but it will act the same as if I had No drivers installed. So I can't play games or anything :(

I've tried almost every version of the drivers and they all have the same problem =/

Update:

Ok, I've gone through almost every fix I can imagine

I tried updating my windows, uninstalling certain hotfixes, updating monitor drivers, removing and updating every single driver for every piece of hardware, removing all the old Atikmdag.sys files in my system32 folder and replacing them with more recent versions, and removing CCC and using only the driver.

I'm going to try a memtest for the third time with only one ram stick and see what happens, but my hopes are pretty low :(

Any suggestions would be nice at this point. My computer has a BSOD every time I boot it up in normal mode with the drivers installed. It never gets past the Windows loading screen unless I boot in safe mode or without drivers =/

Hello veedo,
Have you tried booting into safe mode with networking so you can un-install the drivers and install the new ones, use driver sweeper and after, do a search and delete everything ATI.
Hope this helps a bit, good luck and post your results.

@stoneys-nutz: yep, yep and yessir! Though after I wipe out all the ATI stuff I have to reboot back into normal mode because the driver detection software of ATI's installer doesn't seem to work in safe mode

@archie123: I quadruple checked everything. Everything is plugged into the same place as it was in the old mboard. Everything works But the video card drivers :( I'm considering taking it to Futureshop so they can try different video cards, but I am pretty strapped for cash, so buying a new gpu is going to be difficult

can i just confirm ........... all was well before you installed chipset drivers? everything worked ok even with ATI drivers installed? Did it all screw up only after chipset driver installation?

well, I installed the chipset the first time I booted the computer up with the new mboard, so I don't know if it was broken before and the chipset just made it worse, or if the chipset is the cause of the problem.

In either case, I have no idea how to reverse it and uninstall the chipset.
I was stupid not to make a restore point Before installing it *slaps self in the face*

MotherBoard Chipset sorry. The motherboard came with the CD with the chipset on it.

I'm going to try and see if maybe my standard Vista VGA drivers are messed, do you know where I may find these drivers for download, or are the specific to your hardware?

Thanks a ton for the link, checking all the posts in There now

Go to the site i gave you and go to the download section, see if there is an update for your chipset and install it.
It could be the chipset that is the problem.

mhmmm, doing that now. Still, is there anything I can do to check if the standard VGA drivers are working properly? DXDAIG doesn't even show a device under display, which I believe it should if the standard VGA has kicked in (with the ATI drivers completely uninstalled/wiped out)
