I am using Vista Home Premium 32-bit on a Compaq laptop, i have a Fujitstu MHW2160BH PL ATA disk drive device.
It has been quite tempermental over the last few weeks but now it will not open at all, I have uninstalled and re-installed the device but it still won't work.

Does any one know if there is a solution to this problem??

Thank you
:)

The drive does not open even if you press the eject button on the drive itself?

If so, then the drive is bad. You need to buy a new one.

:( I was hoping that wouldn't be the solution!
Do you know how much they cost roughly?

Thank you

This is going to sound very silly...but i think that the Fujitstu thing is my hard drive, if so then my disk drive is not even being recognised by my laptop.

I am sure your disk drive is recognized. Otherwise, your laptop wouldn't even boot! :)

I must confess I haven't had any luck trying to find internal laptop CD drives. If any other members could point me to one, I'd appreciate it.

I think your best bet is to buy an external DVD burner. They cost about $50. Here is one with good reviews.

Sorry to bother you again, just a quick question...quite confused!
On my laptop when I click on control panel>hardware and sound>device manager and click on disk drive it says that it is the Fujitstu MHW2160BH PL ATA, but when i google information about hard drives appear.
So is a disk drive the same as a hard drive?

Sorry just very confused about it! And I don't understand what i need to buy to fix it.

Heres a trick you might try Brown. Shut Down Laptop. Unplug from AC Adaptor, Remove Battery. Hold down power button for 90 seconds. Re-plug everything in. Reset BIOS Defaults and try to eject the drive using a needle or a paperclip. Now attempt to use the drive. Results please :)

( The power thing shorts the switch and drains the caps on the system board, therefore effectively "power cycling" the computer )

How old is the laptop?

Did all the things that you said Timmah, and no still not working! When i opened the draw I put a disk in and closed it and nothing happened, no recognition of it or any movement in the draw.

Laptop's 2 years old.

Haven't got a clue what to do next!

Thank you for your help

Brownass, I have posted a screenshot for you. You are confusing CD/DVD drives with Disk drives. There is a difference in Device Manager.

Hahaha, thank you Jonathan, this just proves I have no idea about computers (but I guess thats why i'm on here asking for help!) :o

I've just looked at the device manager and it is my CD/DVD drive not my disk drive! It doesn't even recognise that I have a CD/DVD drive, does that mean it has completely broke?

To find out, try booting into your BIOS. Look around for the drive, wherever it may appear (Perhaps the boot section will have something).
