DELL INSPIRON 1520 CD/DVD RW TS-L632H ATA DEVICE problem

Hi Guys & Girls

Please can anyone help, I have a 2 year old Dell Inspiron 1520, which has a problem with the CD/DVD writer (TS-L632H). Everytime I try to either read or burn a CD/DVD a message comes up saying "please insert a CD/DVD in E Drive".

I've looked in the device manger folder, there is no error message or symbol, but it says that the device is working properly. I've already updated the drivers from the Dell web site & still nothing.

Dell are wanting £120 for a tech man to come & look at it & a further £80 for a new drive if required, because it is out of warranty.

I even thought about buying an external rewriter, but would like to try & fix the problem myself first.

If anyone can help in anyway I'd be extremely grateful. I'm not a geek when it comes to fixing comps, but I am good if given instructions.:geek:

Many thanks in advance for any help given.

Hi DonnyLass,
Sounds like one or all of the reader lasers bit the dust and your going to need a new drive. But...it also could be your system doesn't recognize the media type you are using. Have you purchased 'new disks' lately? Is this occuring with all your CD/DVD media? If it's happening with all your media old or new it is most likely a hardware failure even though the Device Manager says it is working o.k. and their are no flags up.
Happened to me and I bit the bullet and bought a new drive.
Best of luck,

It happens with all my media old & new. I've bought different media thinking that I maybe had a bad batch, but it still shows that same message.

How easy or how hard is it the install a new drive. I can't afford to have my laptop away from me for more than 48 hours.

have you installed any apps that have protection drivers eg starforce/secrom these have been known to bug optical drives, it is also worth scanning your pc for rootkits as these can also interfere.

Hi DonnyLass,
Apologize for the delay in response; but it is Mothers Day in the USA today and my home is a 3 ring circus. All my experience has been with desktops and not lappys and to be frank with you I have never opened a lappy up to even peek inside. Look in your owners manual and see if they show you any info on drive replacement. I know that eMachine/Gateway does; but I don't know about Dell. Perhaps one of your friends could help you, or maybe a co-worker that is computer literate. If this were me, I would get the drive from Dell as some of their parts are proprietary; then find a tech to put it in while you wait. It is definitely not actual rocket science; but sort of unplug a cable and replace.
Now if you decide to do this job yourself, this may help you.

Many thanks Jakeman97. I have had a look on the Dell wed site for my manual & it shows you there how to replace them & if I can design & fit my own kitchen then I think I will be able to do this myself. I'm watching a few new Dell Drivers on Ebay, so fingers crossed it won't cost me a fortune. Then I can start to save my files to discs to enable me to reset the laptop back to factory settings.

Watch this space lol

Managed to get a used drive from ebay for £19.99. Just removed old one & replaced it with new one. Done, dusted & sorted. I now have working driver. Easy Peasy Lemon Squeezy.

Just saved myself nearly £200 what Dell wanted for tech man to come & replace a new drive.
