Install a driver without device

I seem to have lost my video card. The device manager is only showing the onboard card and not the PCIEx. Could this be a driver issue and should I try to install drivers for a missing device? I dont have the cd with the VC drivers, so I would need to open the case to see what kind of card it is? Do I have to use a disc to reinstall the drivers? What will happen if I disable the onboard card and/or uninstall its drivers? And if it cant see the device does that mean it is malfunctioning?

I'd try reseating your video card... If its not seen by windows, somethings wrong.

Reseating, i mean open the case and take it out and put back in.

No luck, still cant see it. Is there any point in playing with the drivers? I just saw the specs when I reseated it: ATI Radeon HD 2400 PRO 256mb 64bit ddr2/GDDR3, guess that's a little useless now. Are there any diagnostic tools or ideas you might have? I do not have another computer to try it in.

Windows won't pick up the driver without it being seen first.

Can you think of anything that'd have caused this before it went out?

You can look in the bios to see if the pci-e card got shut off some how.

Where would I look for that? The init display is set on PCIEx and the onboard gpu has only 2 options: auto and always enable (i have it set on auto). If there were a conflict between my onboard and other vc how would i fix it. This has happened before, but i wasn't the one that resolved the conflict, and am not sure what the problem was. So here is the entire story. I got this cheapo cpu and the other vc was given to me separately by the manufacturer. I had a regular monitor hooked up to the onboard, then I bought the samsung and my husband decided to use the other card. It didnt work at first and as far as I recall it wasnt showing up even then (not super reliable intel). I think he did something in the bios, or possibly drivers, and voila, it worked. This happened once again a few months later. Then last week he left the country, and 2 days later the tv cut out on me at the worst possible time, so i freaked restarted (still on hdmi) and nothing happened, so i plugged the old monitor into the onboard and it worked great. I Tried to plug the samsung hdmi cable in and it wouldnt work, but the tv is recogizing the connection because when I unplug the cable from the vc it wont even switch to hdmi, just to pc. I opened up the cpu and made sure the vc was in tight, i switched hdmi cables, i checked the bios to make sure that PCIEx is the first display, then i went to check the drivers and it wasnt even listed in the device manager. The last thing i did was roll back vista to a few days ago, just in case update or something like that messed with it. I know this has happened before so that's why im insisting that the vc is not broken, but i dont know for sure.

I'd blame your husband.... He probably did it so you'd need him, and he could be your savior ;)

Seems the bios is set correct. When you boot, with the video card pugged in, do you see the BIOS boot screen? or any signs of life?

Do you have a regular monitor cable to try the vc to a regular monitor?

You've seemed to have done a good job trouble shooting... Not sure really what else you can do.

Yeah, he definitely set the thing to blow 2 days after he left so I would be stuck here with no TV, just pining for his return. MEN. To answer the previous question, I checked all that. I really thought that somehow by plugging in the other monitor or something I broke it. Ive learned more about this stuff in the last 24 hours than I have in an entire career of working on computers (html, css, php). Im done with it. Thanks again for your help.
