Solved Dvd burner thinks it is a cd rom

I have hp pavilion 6244 PC with a HL-dt-st-dvd rrw gsa hL30. I am running Vista Home Preminum 32 Bit.

My problem is this it won't play any store bought dvds or burn anything any more.

It will play a video I burn with it previously before this happen and cd if if play the song from picking them but not picking play an album.

I have checked bios that's good
I have reinstalled the driver several times
The device manager say it is just a cd rom and I have tried playing in safe mode and still look at the device manager and it says it is just a cdrom.

I have tried everything on HP's Mr fix it with nothing fixing it .
I would understand that their something wrong with the dvd player other then I can play dvds burned on it from previous days.
When I run mr fix it it doesn't say anything except that the media I put in it is not the correct media for fixing the problem.:sarc:

 Any body got any ideas to try next????????????????????

When you right click the drive in Device Manager and click Properties what's it say in DVD Region tab?

Also try burning something with Imgburn See what it gives for an error message.

Part A of the 2 part question? What does it say in properties when I right click. It list my
HL-DT-ST-DVDRRW GSA -H3OL ATA DEVICE
Device Type: DVD/CD-ROM drives
Manufacturer: (Standard- CD Rom Drives)
Location: Location 0 (channel1,Target 0, Lun 0)

Device status

This device is working properly

Of course there are four other windows and if you want them I will put all the information here.

I have been reading where people have went out and bought New drives and still having the same problem. So I believe it is a software issue.

When I look through the details list I get a lot of questions in my head that seem conflicting.
Example-Under the details window Device description-Value sub window It list CD-ROM Drive
When I update the driver or uninstall and then reinstall it comes back as
Windows has determined the driver software for your device is up to date.
and list it as CD-Rom Drive

Is there a Tab in Device Manager drive properties for DVD Region or no?

I was just wondering if maybe it disappeared.
Do you have Nero installed by any chance?
The Nero InCD driver is notorious for causing problems.
If you do have Nero I would get the removal tool and take it completely off.
Then try burning an .iso with Imgburn.

Also in the Imgburn Tools menu Drive submenu it has a command Check for Firmware update.

There's the possibility the drive has a defect. I would go to the manufacturer's site and look for a diagnostic download. Imgburn should tell you what drive manufacturer it is. Look in Tools menu drive submenu for drive info.

Or the last burn log should also have the info.

Thanks for the information I will look in to the manufacturer website.

I was using Nero lite dvd burner and light scribe also for a while with no issues for couple years . But here recently I have uninstalled every burning program just trying to get the dvd player to play a regular dvd. Funny thing with that is I can get it to play a dvd that I burn ayear or so ago with out any problems or issue but can't get it to play anything else besides. Tomorrow another day it's 230 am here good night. Thanks again

That's why I asked about the region code. Seems like it would play a disc burned with no region code. On the Nero it's not enough to uninstall. You have to run the removal tool as many times as it takes until all the vestiges and drivers are gone. I don't understand installing software like that but there are several products that have to publish removal tools since customers complain the uninstall is incomplete.

I haven't run into a case exactly like yours which makes me suspect hardware. We won't know anything until a diagnostic is run.

Ok Got your message haven't had a chance today to look into the manufacturer yet.
Have to grease the squeakie wheel in life agenda thing today.
You are were right about the nero is not all the way uninstalled working on that tonight.

I would agree with you on the hardware issue except for one thing. I have dvd discs I have burned like a year ago that play fine. Just cannot get store bought dvd to play and can't burn anything else for some reason.I have tried several different store brought disc too none of them will play at all.

Hi There,

Want to Thank You for your time and thoughts and really do appreciate all of it.

I went in to program files and deleted nero, and lightscribe programs and then went into regedit and deleted that nero, lightscribe stuff.

I went to bing and found a nero removal too from softpedia and downloaded and ran that. Which it came back with it could not found anything for nero.( Which is bull because when looking in regdit this morning I found nero was back in there)

Then I tried to update driver for dvd player and it told me they are the best drivers.

This morning I had to take out the drive to get the information for the manufacturer which is Hitachi and is a 2007 unit which would be correct from when I brought the computer. I clean out the computer and made sure the correction were tight and still end up with the same results.

But I am thinking you are right about the hardware being the problem. So I was looking the Drive over in my hand and getting all the numbers off of it and flip it over. (click. HUh? turn it again rattle and again rattle click) Ok so we both know this shouldn't be making any noises when I turn this over no matter what direction etc.
So I put the drive back in the tower and fire the computer up and drive made this loud click like some thing drop in to space or shifted into a spot for operation.

But still plays the dvd from a year ago that I burned but not the store bought ones. (Chuckle) I am thinking the laser is just out a wack just enough.

What is your opinion? :sarc:

OK, Got new dvd player today installed and yes it works and know it does not rattle or click when you flip it over when it is in your hand.

So you were right Miles ahead it was the hardware and if I run in to problems I will let you Know.

Thank you for time and Patience

Glad you're back on the air. Bit of an unusual one. But I remember someone on a video forum pointing out that store bought discs are pressings and vastly different from home burn where you basically burn the info into a dye layer.

Works fine playing the store bought DVDs when I could not get them to play at all. ( So that is solved)

Now the new Samsung DVD Players (Had space for an extra one so got it install also) Do not like the rewritable disc. But I have to wait to afford new disc. LONG Story but I try to keep it short as possible. My other half records movies on the rewritables have for some time. If we decided to keep the movies we burn it on a DVD+R.

Ok we have been doing this on the same 10 Rewritable DVD-RW discs for the last 50 to 60 discs. With out any problems. OK some I have deleted all the burning programs from the system and went to Easy burner and tried that program but all I got was an error that it didn't like the disc.
So I gave up and went in computer where that shows all the drives and dragged from one drive to another and it said it was brning it . It did but I think all it did was burn the codecs? I am guessing here! Things that show a folder that reads Video_TS in that folder are a bunch of other things . But I will figure this out sooner or later. Sorry I can't be more of a computer geek for you. But it is what it is.

Thanks for the reply and Happy Holidays to You!

Try burning the erasable discs as DVD+R. Use Imgburn. It may make you format them the first time you use the disc. Takes maybe 20 minutes. After that a quick erase in Imgburn is good enough. I only use erasable discs for test burns. Or if I'm going to watch a movie right then and put the disc back in the pile to be erased. They are notorious for not holding data for any length of time. Pretty much next to useless except to test burn.
