Vista x64 Driver for Optiarc BC-5600S DVDRW/BDROM

Dell Studio 1737 lost driver and not able to find it anywhere on Internet. Tried to use Repair Install, but that didn't work either. Short of new install, would just like to get a working Vista x64 driver for this optical drive. Only finding firmware software, which will not fix problem as Vista no longer recognizes this drive.

Welcome
Several ways to get the driver. For me, the best would be a simple System Restore.
If you cannot for any one of many reasons, try the Device Manager. Go to search, by the start button and type device manager. Look for the missing driver and try to update.

I tried both, but neither worked. This isn't only problem with Vista, but as I said, short of new install, nothing I have tried, works. This is a friend's computer and I have recommended upgrading to Windows 7 x64 and start new, which I suspect will be the final solution as there have just been too many problems with this particular Vista install. Thanks for your suggestions

Dell support only has the firmware update, no drivers. In fact, checking the Internet, this particular drive has a lot of problems, which is probably why Sony discontinued it. According to many posts, this is a Plug & Play(Pray) driver, meaning, it is not available separately, which is why I have had no luck locating any drivers whether it be XP, Vista, or 7. Looks like only option is a wipe and new install. Thanks for the posts. I was hoping to just install a driver to fix problem but that doesn't look like an option any more.

Unfortunately, it's a Catch 22. The firmware will not run because Vista does not see the drive properly. Until it gets identified as an Optiarc BC-5600S, the firmware refuses to work, and I can't get it to do that because I don't have the correct driver. Thanks anyways.

Seems the only thing you can do is to go to Device Manager and uninstall the drive. Then, reboot and let it detect it again. You didn't say anything about the other link I provided.

I already tried that several times, which means that this copy of Vista x64 lost the driver for this drive. As mentioned before, I tried a Repair Install, hoping that it would find the missing driver, but that didn't work either. As for the link, I tried it, but like all the other Driver "*" software sites, all it did was give me more driver site downloads but never giving me the driver I was looking for. I have subscribed to several of these sites over the years and find their usefulness limited. I have been working with computers since 1983 and fix a lot of computers for my friends. Most of the times, I have no problems, but when I do, I go to sites like this hoping that fellow members might provide a solution I had not thought of. In this case, I guess we will have to bite the bullet and do a clean install. I appreciate all your efforts to try and help me on this one, but on this particular Vista install, this is not the only software/hardware problem this computer has been having. I was just hoping I could get away with a quick fix. Thanks guys.
