Flash drive driver not found

Hi everyone,

I'm having a problem with new flash drives. My computer can’t find thedriver. I ran Microsoft Fix it and one problem found said: "windows updateconfigured to never install driver updates.” The fix is to go to windowsupdate, update settings, to change the setting but there is nothing undersettings, no buttons for driver updates, so how do I fix it?
I'm using Windows Vista home premium x64.
Appreciate any help you can give me.

Bob

This is what the help file says about driver updates-

  1. <LI class=step>Click Install updates automatically (recommended).
  2. Under Recommended updates, select the check box for Include recommended updates when downloading, installing, or notifying me about updates, and then click OK.
    GetContent.aspx
If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
Unfortunately, the wording doesn't match what's available. I assume you would checkmark- Give me recommended updates the same way..........................

You tell me what I already know. There is nothing that lets me reset the "windows updateconfigured to never install driver updates."
Thanks for trying.

I know there's nothing that says anything about drivers. I assume unchecking the box for the last thing I mentioned would cause it to stop running updates for drivers. Too bad the words provided by the help file don't match what's there.

Is the current operating system the one that came with your computer at factory settings?

If you cannot fix it by hand, trying using a driver update tool.

here is one from google search, I haven't tested it personally.

To access driver update settings you don't do that in Windows Update settings. Right-click Computer on your desktop or in the Start Menu and select Properties. Go to Advanced System Settings (menu over at left of screen), OK any UAC prompts, then when that appears select the Hardware tab.
Click Windows Update Driver Settings and make adjustments there.
You may need to reboot for it to take effect.

I find the middle selection is the best to use, but that's up to you.

Meanwhile if that fails to help then check the flash drive maker's website or Google that brand/model. It's possible that WU doesn't have the driver but I'm surprised that Windows didn't at least install a generic driver for it.

Try plug in the USB to any another PC because here might be some problem with the USB port. It happens due to malware attack in PCs which malfunctions the USBs.
