Hey!
Im not really much of a computer wizzkid so pardon me if im not making much sense.
I went into tools>account>default mail account>servers tab>

My problem started then. Stupidly i changed my password thinking that i would be able to set it to open up and ask me for one when i tried to access my mail. My reaon for this was so others wouldnt be able to see my mail as i constantly forget to lock my laptop when im away from it.

Anyway i clicked apply and close. then i pressed send/recieve to checkif i had any new mail come in. A popup appeared asking for my username and password so i inouted the password that i had just changed. This is not working for me. And i do not know the old password to change back.

Any ideas what my problems are?

Thanks!

Dell Inspiron 1720 laptop
Vista Home Premium, SP2
Intel Core 2 Duo CPU T7250 @ 2.00GHz 2.00 GHz
3 GB of RAM
32-bit operating system

Above is all of the pertinant system information on my daughter's new (1 year or so) laptop, which very recently stopped accepting Microsoft updates, giving an error saying "646 Windows encountered an unknown error" which tells me nothing at all, nor how to resolve the issue. I have a written list of current updates if is pertinant information, but no matter which one I try to update I still get the same error so it apparently is all of them. . .including future ones since another one came in since discovery of the error and was not allowed to install either.

Can ANYONE out there help me resolve this issue, please? I am about to begin searching online for something to help resolve this issue, but I have never been very good at doing that and would welcome any guidance or advice IN BABY STEPS with step-by-step directions, PLEASE. System information is above, and I will furnish other information if requested.

On a side but related note, some of you may recall me from a month or two with a similar problem in my own laptop, a Dell Inspiron 1525. There, I was trying to update to Vista SP2 and got a different error, which never did get resolved despite going through Microsoft as well as Dell Tech Support multiple times. In the end, MS had me clean off the hard drive to fix it, and reinstall Vista requiring Dell to finally clean up "some loose ends" enabling me to finally properly reinstall everything, EXCEPT SP2, which will remain uninstalled.

I mention this here ONLY because my daughter's laptop has far too much in it for total reinstallation of software to be an option. It operates fine in all ways OTHER THAN the fact it suddenly will not allow the updating of MS updates, and that worries me. I would be very grateful if someone out there can offer some guidance or suggestions to a user who have reason to be VERY nervous doing stuff like this in the inner workings of a computer.

What you say is largely correct. There are very few 64-bit programs
yet. That means that the advantage of 64-bit Windows is mostly
*potential* right now. I think it's good to be running 64-bit Windows
instead of 32-bit Windows, because it lets you buy and install 64-bit
software as it becomes available in the future (and almost certainly,
we will all start seeing more and more of this very soon). But don't
expect much of a performance increase until you start running 64-bit
software.
My system has Vista Home Premium, with Visual Studio 2008 (.Net framework 3.5). I can't seem to find the tool anywhere on my system so I'm thinking I may need to find where it currently is on my system now and install it or turn it on if it is there or download it if it isn't and then install it or turn it on. I would appreciate any help in either locating it on my existing system, or finding where I can download it from.

I recently installed Outlook 2003 on a Vista 64bit PC. I migrated my Outlook contacts and settings successfully and connected to my IP server. I verified that I was able to send and receive e-mail by sending a message to myself.

The problems:

1) I open outlook on initial startup, but it does not automatically download new e-mail from the IP server. I have to click "Send/Receive", then the new e-mails appear. How to I set Outlook to download on startup?

2) If I close Outlook during a session, or if I hibernate (ILO shutdown), when I re-open Outlook, or "wake up" the computer, the "Send/Receive" button won't work and I can't access the "Send/Receive" settings. The only way I have found to resolve this (temporarily) is to reboot the entire system, or never close Outlook after initial startup and don't hibernate.

Any insight is appreciated.

Hello, everyone. I asked this question on another, similar forum but was unable to receive a response.

A link to the other thread is here:

How can I import Windows Mail contact groups into Windows Live Mail?

My problem is as follows:

I'm working in a small office where we have some computers running Windows Vista and using Windows Mail (version 6.0.6000.16388). We have hundreds of contacts and a couple of contact groups on these computer.

A few months ago we got two new computers which are using Windows XP and Windows Live mail (version 2009, build 14.0.8089.0726). Other computers in the office still have Vista and the other version of Windows Mail.

I have been able to export our hundreds of contacts and import them into Windows Live Mail so the new computers have all of the contacts... however I was unable to find a way to import the groups.

These groups are all very large and consist mostly/entirely out of contacts which don't have individual contact entries.

I have been googling to find a solution to this problem. The closest page I could find was this one:
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3818-windows-live-mail-import-vista-contacts-contact-groups.html

I was very discouraged when I saw the big red warning near the top of the page:

---------------
In Contact Groups from Vista, only the contacts that are also included as normal Contacts will be imported into Windows Live Mail. Contacts that were created for the Contact Group only will not be imported into Windows Live Mail. You will need to write these down and manually add them back into Windows Live Mail.
---------------

This pretty much described my situtation exactly, but manually going through all the groups, writing down all the contacts, then manually importing into two separate machines would take forever and is simply not an option.

Is there really no other way I can get these groups into Windows Live Mail?

If it really does turn out that it is completely impossible to import the groups into Windows Live Mail (which I find extremely hard to believe), I'm capable of writing my own conversion software -- but I would need to know the .group Windows Mail file format and the Windows Live Mail file format in detail. Are these file formats publically available? Is there anywhere I can go / anyone I can ask for outlines of the file format?

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer!

Macros? Could it even be something with D.E.P? See is anyone else can
make a better guess because that's all this was.

Microsoft Office 2010 provides you powerful new ways to deliver your best work - whether you’re at work or at home, whether you are travelling in a cab or on a flight, whether you are working on a PC, browser or phone. By offering more ways to access your files from virtually anywhere, Office 2010 puts you in control.

As part of Wednesday’s Office 2010 Beta Announcement we announced the availability of the Office Mobile 2010 Beta -- today’s post describes some of the exciting work we’ve done related to mobility in more detail. Specifically, we’ll talk more about the experiences that make Office 2010 the mobile information worker’s best set of productivity tools on the phone.

Basically, there are two major offerings we provide for mobile information workers to work on their Office documents. Depending primarily on the type of phone you have, you get to choose whichever way works best for you or is available to you. One way is with Microsoft Office Mobile 2010 and another is with Microsoft Office 2010 Mobile Viewers. We’ll discuss both in detail below, but in short…

…If you are using a Windows Phone

You get both options. If you want to modify your Office documents, you can use Office Mobile 2010 applications providing rich user experience which customers of Microsoft Office client applications are familiar with. If you just want to quickly view the documents, you can use Office 2010 Mobile Viewers which display your documents in mobile IE browser. We will walk you through the different scenarios in upcoming posts so you know which option might work best for you.

…If you are using a phone built on a non-Windows Platform

You get the Office 2010 Mobile Viewers option only. As previously mentioned, you get to view the Office documents in your mobile browser whether you have smartphones like iPhone, Blackberry, Android, Symbians or non-smartphones.

The Beta for Office Mobile 2010 is available worldwide in Windows Marketplace for Mobile for Windows Mobile 6.5 phones. To try the Office 2010 Mobile Viewer, you need to have the Office Web Apps installed on your company’s Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 and then you can use explorer on your phone to view Office documents on the server (read this Office Web App blog post for more information on how to deploy the Web Apps in the enterprise).

In future blog posts, we will explore tips and tricks for the different apps and tools Microsoft Office provides to meet the demands of your busy life on-the-go with your mobile device. In the meantime, enjoy the information below and we hope to hear your feedback soon!

Office Mobile 2010

Use Microsoft Office Mobile 2010 on your Windows phone to get the familiar Microsoft look and feel as well as the services that you’re used to.

Even when you’re on the road, you can view Microsoft Office Word, Microsoft Office Excel and Microsoft Office PowerPoint documents sent as email attachments.

Word Mobile 2010

Excel Mobile 2010

PowerPoint Mobile 2010

Office Mobile 2010 also makes it easy for you to review documents on the move by adding the ability to edit Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files. So use your commute time in a cab or on a flight to customize an existing presentation by hiding or rearranging slides, reviewing speaker notes, and even adding new notes as you rehearse. What’s more, you can now use your Windows phone as a presentation aid that enables you to control the slideshow and simultaneously view notes as you engage more effectively with your audience.

Office 2010 Mobile Viewers

With your mobile device browser, Office 2010 Mobile Viewers will help you stay organized, get things done, and present information by keeping Office at your fingertips.

Office 2010 Mobile Viewers enable you to view Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel files in an easy to read small-screen format that maintains high fidelity. Office 2010 Mobile Viewers target a wide range of devices and micro browsers so that people with or without smartphones can take the advantage of the cool features without having to upgrade your mobile phone. Here are a few examples.

Viewing product sales documents on your mobile phone

Imagine you are sitting in the airport when your colleague calls you and says that the inventory data sheet and promotion document you are going to share with the customers later has been modified and saved back on the SharePoint server to reflect the latest status. You don’t need to bother turning on your laptop. You open up your browser from your mobile phone, connect to your team SharePoint portal, select the inventory data sheet, and quickly see the new inventory diagram. You then click on promotion document and see that the visuals have been revamped. You feel confident before you walk on the plane knowing that the customers will surely be happy with your presentation later.

Excel Mobile Viewer

Excel Mobile Viewer - Details

Word Mobile Viewer – Image View

Word Mobile Viewer – Text View

Joining a meeting and viewing the presentation on your mobile phone

Office 2010 Mobile Viewers also go beyond just allowing you to view your own files. Imagine you’re stuck in a traffic jam are going to be late for a meeting that starts in 5 minutes. Now you pull out your mobile phone and pop open the email you received from the meeting presenter that contains a URL to the presentation broadcast (“Broadcasting a Slide Show” is a new feature supported by PowerPoint 2010 that will be talked about in more detail in the future). You can now participate in the call and view the current slide in real time as the presentation moves along.

PowerPoint Mobile Viewer – Image View

PowerPoint Mobile Viewer – Outline View

We hope you’re as excited about Office Mobile 2010 as we are! Future posts will walk you through each of the above mobile productivity tools in more detail so when they are released you’ll be able to use them as we do and improve your productivity on the go.

the other day my dad bought me home a new graphic card, installed it and it worked perfect, got the latest drivers from nvidia, sorted. I then decided to take it downstairs and plug it into the tv to see how good it really was. plugged it in via a "nvidia compupack" thing and it worked fine screen res was a tad high, but i could change that to how i liked it, great! took it back upstairs and plugged it in and it worked, so then i think, i have got an old portable dvd player with a "vid in" plug on it, so i assemble a plug from s-video to 3.5mm and it worked. so i reboot it to finalise it.

here comes the problem, it can see the dvd player but wont extend my display onto it, checked the makeshift converter and it looks fine,. when i select the dvd screen it says "this GPU supports a single display, to use two displays on this computer, reboot the computer" so i reboot and its still the same!!

help me please!!
thanks, daniel

Hello,

Im on server 1 trying to execute a .bat on server 2. All the .bat does is create a folder called "test". I've tried a couple different ways and neither seems to work:

1) Invoke-Command -computer $server -scriptBlock {"C:\sqltest\test.bat"}

I have powershell V2, and part of the reason to going to PS2 vs PS1 was for this command, and when i try the above i also get the following error:
PS P:\> Get-Help Invoke-Command
Get-Help : Cannot find Help for topic "Invoke-Command".
At line:1 char:9
+ Get-Help <<<< Invoke-Command

2) $job = "cmd.exe /c cscript C:\sqltest\test.bat",$null,$null,1
$result = (Get-WmiObject -List -Computer $server | where{$_.Name -eq "Win32_Process'}).Create($job)

any ideas on what may be going wrong?

thank you!

My computer froze during the restart process of a recent update
(KB971512) forcing me to manually restart it and now loads very slowly.
It runs fine except for whenever it need to load (example: Left 4 Dead 2
take about 10 minutes to load a level, but then runs fine besides the
occasional sputter when it loads during play).

Other things: whenever I start Windows, it comes up with "Windows
update: Configuring 3/3 0%" but then moves onto the login screen. I also
tried running Windows update again (I thought maybe it would catch it's
own error or something) but I get error 80070002, which I already did
their prescribed fix for only to still get the same error. I cannot
uninstall this update from the installed updates list. Also, I'm on
Vista 64 bit.

I think that's about it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Edit: Oh wow. Sorry about all the typos in the title.
I need to use IE for about 4 hours each month, to run a .NET web client that cannot run in Firefox.

Hey guys.

I am trying to troubleshoot a sound issue with a Vista Home Basic machine.

I can't really give you all the MOBO specs etc because I am not currently in front of the machine. I can however confirm that it is using a Realtek chipset and is configured using the Realtek Sound Manager software.

I am really just wanting to use basic sound (i.e. just speaker, not 5.1, 7.1 etc).

I am trying to make use of an old stereo system by using a 3.5mm aux jack to dual RCA (white and red) plugs.

I can get sound when I plug the aux jack into the front earphones port but I cannot get sound when I try and use the analogue audio out (lime green) port at the rear of the machine. Vista states that it is working correctly and has a tick next to the speakers but no sound is produced by the speakers.

The MOBO has the following available audio connectors:

Analogue = Mic in (Pink) Audio in (light blue) Audio out (lime green)

Centre Speaker (Orange) Rear Surround (Black) Mid Surround (Grey)

Digital = 1x SPDIF

You may ask at this point, why not just use the front headphones jack? Well, the problem is that it seems to be very sensitive in that Vista keeps reporting that the jack is cycling between a connected and disconnected state.

I also cannot use the SPDIF, as the old stereo only supports aux left and right RCA.

Also, when I try and get one of the rear ports to work, I have made sure that nothing is connected to the sound ports at the front as I know that this can cause problems.

When I plug in the 3.5mm jack into the green port, the Realtek sound manager kicks in and says that "a jack as been connected". I then confirm that I have infact connected the jack to the rear audio out port. I then follow the steps in the wizard but am not able to get sound.

I made sure that I used the most basic settings (i.e. speakers and not 5.1 etc).

I even tried the grey, black and orange ports (even though I know they are used for surround sound setups) and still no luck.

One interesting setting I did notice was that in Winamp, I had to select the "allow mono speaker" setting to have it play sound through the front headphones port.

However, when I was configuring the rear green port in the Realtex Sound Manager software, there was no mono option. There was only stereo, 5.1, 7.1 and some quad....... thing.

Any ideas guys on how to get the rear green port working?

I am wondering if it has something to with a connector on the MOBO. But as I said, Vista and Realtek manager seem to report that all is well.

My thanks in advance.

I am writing a little application to run on WinXP, Vista and Windows 7. The application is to be used in a big company where only system administrators are allowed to install. The users have a restricted account.

Here is my problem:
When the software is installed I place a XML settings file in the CommonApplicationData folder. The settings file has information on SMTP settings and local printer information (supplied by the administrator under installation). When the users run the program they have read-preveliges on the settings file but they can not write to it = they can not change the default printer since this is saved in the settings file.

How do I go about this? I have tried saving the file to the LocalApplicationData but this will place the file in the administrator's LocalApplicationData and thus unaccessable to the user.

Any ideas?

Best Regards

Hello everyone, I have been pulling my hair out trying to resolve my issue, and I failed, so here i come looking for some help from those smarter than me.

I have windows Vista Home preimum 32 bit. Know i screwed up, I admiot it, by letting my security suite expire, causing a hacker to find a way into my system. and a good job he did.

now this is a brand new Toshiba laptop, it once had factory restore on a seperate partition but i had to delete it because the hacker compromised it's files.

So here is what I got now, once i found a hacker had compromised my system, i began formatting the hd, erasing it, and then reinstall the operating system. every time i got finished with the installation, it was just l;ike it was before, slow and corrupt. this is what led me to deleting the partition that had the system recovery installed on it.

now I am in Memory by running the MEM at the command prompt, it appears there is all kind of strange files installed here, might also be corrupt. my question is this, how do you uninstall these items from your Memory. I found loadhigh to put them up there but how do you get them out.

I also thought it might be the config.sys or the autoexec.bat but vista don't use these anymore. any help would be appreciated, getting ready to upgrade to windows 7 and need to get this memory issue resolved

thanks

So I have a Compaq Presario V6000 Notebook PC
I've posted a problem on this site before and I figured it out on my own. Now all of a sudden, what I used to do, doesn't work anymore.
Whenever my wireless stopped working I would shut my computer down. I'd do a primary hard drive test. It would fix my wireless almost guaranteed. I tried it earlier today and it didn't work.
Now I got this screen telling me I need the Vista CD to resolve a problem with one of the drivers.
I don't have the Vista CD. My laptop came with the program not the CD.
I checked with my manufacture website and I even downloaded an HP Support Assistant.
It says everything is up to date.
Help?
