At my school a document appeared on my student drive on the network. I have never seen this file before and it is bad enough to get me expelled. Does anyone know of any software to trace the origions of this file? For ex. It was off a thumb drive or it was transferred over the network. I really need help on this one guys.

Thanks so much,

I am writing a little application to run on WinXP, Vista and Windows 7. The application is to be used in a big company where only system administrators are allowed to install. The users have a restricted account.

Here is my problem:
When the software is installed I place a XML settings file in the CommonApplicationData folder. The settings file has information on SMTP settings and local printer information (supplied by the administrator under installation). When the users run the program they have read-preveliges on the settings file but they can not write to it = they can not change the default printer since this is saved in the settings file.

How do I go about this? I have tried saving the file to the LocalApplicationData but this will place the file in the administrator's LocalApplicationData and thus unaccessable to the user.

Any ideas?

Best Regards

This problem that I'm having happens with every disk I purchase. Oddly enough, I can download software via websites just fine. And yes, in Hardware & Sound, it's set to "Play CDs or other media automatically".

Sooo, can I get somebody's 2 cents?

Is MD5 identical for corrupt/non-corrupt files?

I've been using the free Cobian Backup for about a year, with no problems. My backup procedure is to make full backups every 2 weeks, with daily incremental backups.

My 400GB external HDD is beginning to fill up. I need to remove some of the older full backups. Of course, the problem is that an older file may be non-corrupt, whereas a newer "copy" of the same file may have become corrupt.

I recently found another free tool, "Duplicate Cleaner". This file searches for duplicate files that can be identical in name, time, MD5 or any selected combination of these. I'm planning to use Duplicate Cleaner to remove duplicate files from my HDD.

So here is my question.

Is it possible for a corrupt file to show the same MD5 hash as an identical non-corrupt file? Or does the corruption produce a different MD5?

If the hashes are the same, then of course there is a danger that Duplicate Cleaner (or any tool) could delete the non-corrupt file and leave the corrupt file.

(Note that this thread is related to "MD5", rather than "Software".)
.

This software when a person signs onto a library pc gives them 60 minutes then times them out. It then changes to a screen that tells them their session has timed out but when on Vista also immediately brings up the Shutdown dialog box with Sleep, Logoff etc. You cannot cancel this box; it forces you to do something. What is is supposed to do and does when on XP is reset itself after 1 minute for the next user. Why would it be making the shutdown dialog box come up on Vista but not XP and is there a way to stop it?

The conversion and burn worked and when I went to shut the program down I got the message, "ConvertXtodvd transcoder has stopped working."I went to VSO's website forum and there's not a whole lot about the error. They did tell us to come here and see if anything can be done. I think that they believe it's either 3rd party software,(but why wouldn't my earlier versions fail?) or it's a Vista issue. Maybe someone here has a suggestion.
